The first in a series on summertime music festivals in the United States features SummerStage, a mammoth annual festival that brings more than 100 outdoor shows to New York City, almost all of them free.

As Brazilian hip-hop and samba alchemist Marcelo D2 took the stage on a sweltering Sunday afternoon, the roaring New York City crowd seemed to harness the energy of the midday heat, sending it back at the charismatic rapper through raucous shouts and applause.

 

而这，只不过是“夏季舞台”（SummerStage）中的一天。这个场景在最烈日炎炎的的几个星期中，会反复上演在中央公园（Central Park）以及市内其他17个公园里。

It’s just another day at SummerStage, a scene replayed throughout these hottest weeks of the summer in Central Park or in one of 17 other parks across the city.

Running from June through September, the mammoth annual festival brings more than 100 outdoor shows to New York. Performances range from the gospel music of Hezekiah Walker to contemporary dance by Keigwin and Company, from the classical innovations of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble to reenactments of Sophocles’ ancient play Oedipus Rex. Despite the acclaimed level of SummerStage performers, nearly every show is free to the public.

New York resident Adam Hertz, 28, had a wonderful time seeing edgy jazz pioneers Medeski Martin and Wood perform in June. “The crowd was very enthusiastic, and they really had an ongoing dialogue with the musicians improvising on stage,” he said. “Everyone was just there to have a good time, embrace the music and support the arts in New York City.”
