There are almost 1,900 mosques in the United States today, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. This is the third in a series of profiles of American mosques.

The Albanian Islamic Center in Harper Woods, Michigan, was founded by Albanian Muslims in the Detroit area. Today, it still serves the Albanian-American community as well as newer Muslim immigrants from the Balkan countries, plus Iranians, Palestinians, Maltese, Arabs and Indians.

Harper Woods is a suburb of Detroit, and its mosque was founded in the early 1960s by Albanian-American Muslims who settled there. They had been attending prayers at other mosques such as the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan. Once the Albanian Islamic Center was built, they began worshipping there, since they were able to use their own language, cultural traditions and some rituals that differ from those of the Arab-origin Muslims in Dearborn.

The imam of the mosque, Shuajb Gerguri, reaches out to people of other faiths. In 2010 he joined other religious leaders in an interfaith prayer service aimed at bringing comfort to cancer victims. Gerguri also helped design a sanctuary at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn, where he is staff chaplain. The sanctuary features a chapel with a Christian tabernacle and Jewish menorah, a prayer room for Muslims, and symbols and holy books from different faiths.
