上星期三，我飞到甘肃兰州，看看IREX在西北师范大学附属高中举办的“新闻在中国”夏令营中的一天是什么样的。这个一周项目安排紧凑，它以安嫩代尔中学的师生们为首，将全兰州十多个中学的学生们聚到一起，学习怎样出版学生报纸。在我参加的课程中，学生们学习撰写社论，进行采访，以及安排报纸的布局。
On Wednesday, I flew over to Lanzhou, Gansu to see what a day at IREX’s “Journalism in China” summer camp held at Northwest Normal University High School is like. This intensive one week program, headed by Annandale High School teachers and students, brought together students from over ten high school all over Lanzhou to learn how to publish a student newspaper. During the session I attended, students learned to write editorials, conduct interviews, and organize newspaper layouts.
虽然我每天都读新闻， 但仅仅坐在其中一个班级里，我就学到了很多关于报纸出版过程的知识。有很多事情是我没有察觉到的，而新闻编辑们在其中倾注了不少心思，如布局和内容的结构。一旦你将内容从过程中分离出来，中文和英文新闻实际上是多么相似，这使我震惊。
Just from sitting in one of their classes, I learned a lot about the process of publishing newspapers, even though I read the news daily. There are many things I did not notice that newspaper editors put a lot of thought into, such as the layout and structure of the content. It surprised me how similar Chinese and English journalism actually is once you separate the content from the process.
当学生们忙着写文章以赶上最后期限时，我享受了与项目老师同住的旅馆后小吃街上买来的各种美味佳肴。在我到访的两天里，兰州的天气凉爽干燥，十分舒适，周围的山峦也很漂亮。但是，同几乎所有中国城市一样，兰州因重度污染问题以及来自冶炼厂的烟雾遮盖了曾经清朗湛蓝的天空而饱受痛苦。
While students were busy writing articles to meet their deadlines, I enjoyed a variety of delicious delicacies from the snack street right behind the hotel with the program teachers. Lanzhou’s dry and cool weather was quite comfortable for the two days I visited and the surrounding mountains were very nice. However, as with almost all Chinese cities, Lanzhou suffers from heavy pollution problems and smoke from the refineries obscure what would have been a clear blue sky.
