Shanghai native and IVLP alumnus Mo Zhang, was selected one of the Runners Up in the Exchanges-Connect photo contest ―Postcards from Home: Show Us Where You‘re From.‖ Mo Zhang‘s submission was a picture of a Shanghai resident on a scooter passing a graffiti wall. In his explanation, he wrote:
The graffiti on the houses in the old area was created in April 2010 by German artists. Although the resi-dents have shown tolerance towards this new art style, which is still not popular in Shanghai, they feel annoyed by photographers who only care about the graffiti pieces.
One resident complained to me: “Why do you guys pay so much attention to the graffiti, of which we know little? Why don't you pay attention to the living conditions in this poor residential area?" Now Shanghai is experiencing a new wave of urbanization, which will surely create a new generation of riches and new prosperous areas. But many old resi-dential areas, including Tielu, have found no hope of change because of the huge cost of rebuilding those areas. That is my Shanghai: attractive, energetic, and com-plicated.
