前不见古人，

后不见来者。

The ages before me I cannot see,

the ages behind me neither can I.

译后：这首诗有将“古人”和“来者”译为“圣人（sages）”，即像燕昭王那样的明君的，这样一来，此诗就仅仅是一个怀才不遇者的哀叹。我认为这样解读，有过度阐释之嫌，过于超越文本而附会历史。而且这样解读反而有损这首诗本应有的价值和深度。我的译文紧扣原文，几乎是直译，这种译法保留了原文的弹性空间，也保留了它的深度。读者可以从多种角度去理解，比如对生命之短促宇宙之无限的感慨，对个人之渺小的悲叹等等等等。

今天和网友自娱自乐君讨论时，顺便查到上世纪初一位美国作家、诗人，Witter Bynner , 给这首诗做的英译。这个译本气脉流畅，语言饱满。要早看到这个译本，就不会有我上面的翻译了，呵呵。（7月2日补记）
