Fair》表现的是一位在前线作战的士兵对恋人的思念，士兵请求去斯卡布罗市镇的
人带去给姑娘的问候。在每一段歌词的第一句后，插入了一句看似毫不相干的唱词：“那里有欧
芹、鼠尾草、迷迭草和百里香”。正是这句歌词的反复出现，使歌曲的怀旧气氛被浓墨重彩，使人
对斯镇自然纯朴的美丽风光充满了无限的向往。在歌曲中出现的和声颂唱（Cantile）使得这首抒
情歌曲韵味无穷。
歌里的那个斯卡布罗集市其实是暗指那个姑娘毫无原由地离开了这位歌者，而歌者对姑娘提出的这
些完全不可能实现的要求是在向她表明，爱情有时必须要求双方做出在常人看来不可能的事情才会
持久。当一个人为了爱情去尝试明知不可能的事情，才最能表明他（她）对爱情的忠贞。而欧芹
鼠尾草、迷迭香和百里香这四种植物则在中世纪时的欧洲分别代表善良、力量、温柔和勇气，这也
是歌者对姑娘的期望。方面是对青春时代的清纯和爱情的缅怀，一方面是在用梦幻般的曲调和轻吟
低诉的唱词，在编织着有关战争的童话。
