As Christmas approaches, the big shops, gaily decorated and brightly lit, stay open long after dark, and get more and more crowded. Everyone is buying Christmas presents for friends and relations. The displays（陈设，柜台） of toys are particularly brilliant（明亮的）, for at Christmas people try to give the children everything they want.

On Christmas Eve, when the children go to bed they often hang up a large stocking or a pillowcase to receive the presents. The parents tell them to go off to sleep quickly, but they just pretend to hoping to catch a glimpse (瞥一眼) of Father Christmas. Meanwhile, unknown to them, the parents are busy filling stockings and pillowcases with presents in the next room. When they are sure the children are really asleep, they creep into the children's bedroom and leave the presents near their beds.

On Christmas Day, many people go to church after breakfast. In the afternoon many families listen to the Queen (女王) broadcasting (广播) to the Commonwealth (英联邦国家). In the evening, after a huge tea （茶点）, the family sit round the fire, eating seets and fruit, talking, or watching television, or playing games.

 

圣诞节当天，人们经常在早饭后去教堂祈祷，下午则会收听女王对英联邦国家发布的广播。当夜幕降临，结束了奢华下午茶的人民，在家中备齐糖果水果，和家族成员会聚一堂，围炉而坐，或聊天，或看电视，或嬉戏玩乐。
