    皮卡.布朗（Petra Brown）：出生在英国卢顿，于1975年移居到美丽的斯诺登尼亚。 10年后，于20世纪80年代开始了正式的艺术教育。Meadowside儿童读物出版她的第一本书《If big can ,I can!》 她的作品还有《玛格丽特的喷泉》。

At first I lived with my parents and older sister in a modern semi-detached brick house on the edge of Luton. Although quite near the town, we were surrounded by cornfields and green hills. We were lucky enough to have a large garden, trees to climb, herbs to eat, and a mass of hawthorn hedges into which my dad cut little corridors and rooms for my sister and I to play in. My parents had a comprehensive library of books. I spent ages pouring over the pictures, trying to copy them. When I was ten my parents went a little crazy (I’m glad to say) and moved to a house with it’s own morgue. An old slate-quarry hospital in Snowdonia. A great stone-block building, filled with draughts and ghosts.  What a wonderful shock! From a bland, middle-class suburb to a small welsh town, full of wonderful characters, Victorian buildings, surrounded by a magnificent landscape. Life suddenly became extremely interesting!

I stI still live in Wales,  in an old mill this time, with my parents and my partner Iain. Iain is a writer and artist and we work side by side together in our snug little studio. It’s so nice to share our creativity.





 
I'll, perhaps write a little more about life pre-illustration another time, though it's terribly tedious. So let's rush forward now to 2006...

My first picture book 'If Big Can... I Can.' written by Beth Shoshan and published by Meadowside, was shortlisted for the Booktrust Early Years Awards.


I’m so lucky to be doing this now.
Right from the start, pouring over the illustrations in those books as a little girl... it’s what I’ve wanted to do.

'Shh! Don't Wake the Baby!' was written in-house at Cat's Pyjamas, at that time-Fernliegh Books. It is all about a little elephant who wants to play and have fun, but is told to keep as quiet as he can because his sibling- a new baby is asleep.

At the end of the book is a pop-up, which was a bit of a challenge. I had to draw a design flat and then an extremely clever chap- Richard Jewitt, a paper engineer, turned my drawing into a 3D dummy mock up. Then I had to work on six seperate images that Richard put together as the final pop-up.

I can't say I'm very keen on the laughing baby sound that starts up when you open the pop-up, but I am pleased with the way it looks.

I was really delighted when I was asked to illustrate this project because I just adore turning animals into characters, and Africa has some fab beasts to work with!

Granny Sarah and the Last Red Kite

Granny Sarah and the Last Red Kite, written by Malachy Doyle and published by welsh publisher Gomer (Pont Books). Lowri loves to hear her gran tell the story of how, as a little girl, she helped to save the last red kite in Wales.

I was really excited, but extremely worried about taking on this book. Malachy Doyle is such a great and respected author! I had provided the artwork for a couple of paperback fiction books for Gomer (Pont Books) and had one picture book (if Big Can... I Can) under my belt, when I got the call for amazing project. I'd had the invaluable help of Meadowside's Mark Mills with my first picture book, now I was left to work alone. There were no design layouts for me to follow. I was left to decide how the text and images should fit together on each page. It was scary but so nice to haver a free hand. After a long struggle and a great deal of nervous strain I finished, a little late, but really rather proud that I had managed. There were no alterations... lovely, lovely Gomer! Thankfully, and most importantly, Mr. Doyle seemed to be pleased. Phew!

Hush Little Baby

Hush Little Baby was published by the american publisher 'Tiger Tales' in 2007. The text is the old traditional baby soothing, nursery rhyme.
I really enjoyed illustrating this one, I like the vintage feel.
The book is padded, with rounded corners and really thick, highly glossy pages.... it feels kinda comfy :-)

This is the recurring page design on the left hand side of the spread. This is where the text sits.


Then the main picture sits on the right hand page. This repetition of layout helps the reader to make the rhyme flow. The predictability also makes the child, hopefully, more relaxed and drowsy.

Tiger Tales had seen, in my portfolio, a picture of a bear in a waistcoat, which I had produced for Gibson's Greetings Cards. This gave them an idea of how they wanted the illustrations look.

'If You Can... We Can!' was written by Beth Shoshan and published by Meadowside Children's Books in 2008.

After the success of 'If Big Can... I can', Meadowside decided to create another book using the same two characters, a big brown bear and a little koala. But they gave me a choice... and I, being the sort of person that relishes change, chose rabbits. I'm not sure how the author saw the relationship in this book, but I imagined them as parent and child, rather than friends.

It was a fun book to illustrate, I enjoyed it enormously. Meadowside are lovely to work for, they gave me so much freedom. I think it's my favourite book, so far.

If  Big can   I  can  这本有中文版《大大行,我也行》


这本书里的大大就像家庭里的大人，“我”就是孩子，孩子总喜欢模仿大人的一举一动，甚至想超越大人，这是很普遍的幼儿心理，由此可见孩子总喜欢和大人一起玩，特别需要大人的陪伴。
