答案是B。为什么不能选A.？a large number不是表示“一个大的数字”吗？

答：的确应该选B。你不能将a large number逐字翻译为“一个大的数字”，因为a large number表示“很多”，后面接复数名词，谓语动词要用复数形式。就是去掉形容词large，a number表示“若干”，也是复数概念，谓语动词还得用复数形式。比如：A number of people were injured in the collision. (冲突中有若干人受伤。) 另外，短语numbers of 表示“相当多”，谓语动词也得用复数形式。比如：Numbers of young people like driving fast. (许多年轻人喜欢飚车。)

    注意：短语the number of 表示一个特定的数字，尽管后面接的是可数名词，谓语动词却要用单数形式。比如：The number of people using public transport is increasing. (使用公共交通工具的人数正在增加。)
