Suzhou was founded in 514 BC, so it
has over 2500 years of history, with an abundant desplay of relics
and sites of historical interest. The canals, stone bridges,
pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens have contributed to its
status as one of the top tourist destinations in China. How do you
expect to understand Suzhou better in one day? The itinerary below
is strongly recommended.
Suzhou Museum/苏州博物馆
The museum was founded and first
opened to the public in the former residence of the Zhong Prince of
the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in 1960. The current building was
designed by Chinese-American architect Ieo hMing Pei and
inaugurated in 2006.
The museum has more than 15,000 pieces in its collections.
Most are ancient paintings and calligraphy, ceramics, crafts,
unearthed relics and revolution relics. It also possesses more than
70,000 books and documents, and over 20,000 rubbings of stone
inscriptions. The collection of paintings and calligraphy includes
works of masters from Song Dynasty to Ming and Qing
dynasites.
Pingjiang Street／平江路
Many local people are still living in the Pingjiang area, and
Suzhou is often dubbed the 'Venice
of the East' or 'Venice of China', so it must be an unforgettable
experience to take a boat crusie in the Pingjiang
river. If you are enough lucky
that you can hear the boat driver's authentic songs.
Suzhou is also called the city of gardens, so you can't miss the garden. You can ask the boat driver to send you to the Garden of Couple's Retreat from the Pingjiang river.
The Couple's Retreat
Garden/耦园
The original garden was built by Lu
Jin, prefect of Baoning district, in 1874. Later, it was purchased
by Shen Bigcheng, the magistrate of Susong county, who rebuilt it
in its current from and changed the name to the Couple's Garden
Retreat. This name refers to the garden's two parts and alludes to
a couple.
The garden is located in the intersection of canals and is surrounded by water on three sides. It is accessibe directly from the canal by boat. The garden is divided into an east and west section by the residental core in the middle.
The Grand Canal/大运河
The ancient city of Suzhou was the paradise for all merchants
owing to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal; even to this day, about
half of the volume of goods is transported by waterway through the
Grand Canal. Along the way, there are 8 ancient gates of Suzhou,
more than 20 stone bridges in diverse styles of traditional
designs, ancient river town dwellings and historical relics; and
the gorgeous lighting adds more glamour to the night boating the
Grand Canal.
In addition, during the journey, vistors can also learn the
historical stories, local customs, and enjoy good food of local
flavors when appreciating the surrounding ladnscapes.
The Panmen Ancient City
Gate/盘门
The Panmen is a famous historical landmark of Suzhou for its
complex of both land and water city gates that people directly
refer to it as the 'Land and Water Gate'.
The Panmen is part of the ancient city wall built in 514 BC that surrounded and protected Suzhou, which is the only entrance to the wall that surrounded ancient Suzhou.
