Suzhou has
been called the City of Silk for hundreds of
years. I would like to introduce one typical silk town in Suzhou -
Zhenze/震泽 in Wujiang District
about one hour driving away from
the downtown of Suzhou.
Suzhou is one of the best cities to
raise the mullberry trees around China because of the mild weather
and abundant water. The silkworms, who make the cocoons, feed the
leaves of mullberry and competent local people produce the silk
from the cocoons.
The silk can be made into many products in our daily life such
as silk quilts, clothes, scarfs, embroideries and so on.
Taihu Snow Silk/太湖雪 is one of the most famous
silk brands in Zhenze. It
has various ranges of silk products, what's more,
it can arrange some DIY experiencing programs
themed silk for tourists. For
instance, they can learn how
to embroider with a design of simple
pattern or draw interesting figures on the cocoons. The most
important is they can
buy high-quality silk products.
In addition, it has a very fantastic tea house, where tourists
can enjoy the unique smoked green-bean tea and tasty snacks.
In fact, Zhenze is also one of water towns in Suzhou. It is
not well-known comparing with Zhouzhuang/周庄 or
Tongli/同里, but it has more natural life.
The old pagoda and bridge are standing along the riverside and
have witnessed each change happened for thousand of years.
The local people are still living in the old town and they
start to be ready to receive the booming tourists.
Recommended day tour: Visit Taihu Snow Silk
in the morning, have the lunch in a local
restaurant and ramble around the old street in the afternoon.
