紀伯倫《給予》

  紀伯倫·哈利勒·紀伯倫（Jubran Khalil Jubran ，1883年1月6日－1931年4月10日），1931年逝世於美國紐約，享年48歲，遺體葬於黎巴嫩。

  他是黎巴嫩的詩人、作家與畫家，被稱為「藝術天才」、「黎巴嫩文壇嬌子」，代表作：《淚與笑》、《沙與沫》、《先知》，是阿拉伯現代小說、藝術、散文的奠基人。

  《給予》亦出現在《國家圖書館》詩書展中，摘取名句四則，其中譯部分略為潤飾如下:

There are those who give with joy, and thatjoy is their reward.

And those who give with pain, and that painis their baptism.

And there are those who give and know not painis giving.

nor do they seek joy,nor give withmindfulness of virtue;

They give as in younger valley

the myrtle breathes it fragrance intospace.

Through the hands of such as these God speaks,

and from behind their eyes. He smiles uponthe earth.

有人快樂地付出,快樂就是他們的獎賞。

有人痛苦地付出,痛苦就是他們的洗禮。

有人付出時不感覺痛苦,

不尋求快樂,也不懷抱行善的念頭;

他們的給予好比遠處山谷中的桃金孃,

將花香吐入空中。

It is well to give when asked,

but it is better to give unasked, throughunderstanding;

And to the open-handed

the search for one who shall receive is joygreater than giving.

別人開口求你時給予固然好，

若能體恤別人需求，不等對方開口即給予更佳;

對樂善好施的人來說，

尋找受者比給予更快樂。

And is there aught you would withhold?

All you have shall some day be given；

Therefore give now,

that the season of giving may be yours andnot your inheritor's.

你還有什麼東西不想給人嗎？

總有一天，你擁有的一切都得拱手讓人；

不如現在就給吧，

把給予的機會留給自己，而非你的繼承者。

Surely he who is worthy to receive his daysand his nights is worthy of all else from you.

And he who has deserved to drink from theocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.

誠然，值得接受他的白天和黑夜的人，也值得從你那裡得到其他一切。

一個值得啜飮生命之洋的人，

當然值得從你的小溪舀一杯水。
