昨天，我坐火车从杭州到了上海，全程只用了一个半小时。以前，同样一段路要花5小时时间，听说以后只要45分钟。今早，我和一批英国公司见了面，它们都利用上海为平台发展自己在中国的业务，其中不乏玛莎，巴克莱，渣打，阿斯利康和英国石油等大牌。

一些公司随后和我们一起游览了上海世博会会场。现场的建设已经初具规模，英国的展馆将十分激动人心。英国政府在网络和信息方面对展馆的推广提供支持，为英国企业创造实际的商机。目前，我还不能透露太多，但相信这个英国展区将为英国工程和设计能力进行完美的诠释。

几个月前，我们在伦敦带35个中国企业参观了奥林匹克公园。和我一样，他们都赞不绝口。新的奥运场馆不仅对伦敦来说是一笔财富，在国际和地区影响力上也举足轻重。更难能可贵的是，目前工程进度比计划超前。

在参观了世博会会场后，我们又访问了中兴公司，中兴主要产品是手机和通信技术，他们在140个国家拥有500个办公室。他们手机生产数量超过摩托罗拉，但在英国基本没人知道他们。相信这种状况不会持续多久。

我相信，中英企业相互之间正面对着前所未有的商机，在信息通信产业更是如此。

I got the train from Hangzhou to Shanghai yesterday – the journey only took one and a half hours. The journey used to take 5 hours and it’s said that next year, it will only take 45 minutes. I met with British business this morning – companies all using Shanghai as a platform to grow their China business – Marks and Spencer, Barclays, Standard Chartered, Astra Zeneca and BP to name a few.

Some of them joined us on a tour around the Shanghai Expo site. It’s really bgeinning to take shape and the UK’s exhibition is going to be a real inspiration. The British Government then will provide the right internet support and information to turn that inspiration into concrete business opportunities for UK PLC. I can’t give too much away but the British exhibition is going to be a fantastic showcase of British engineering and design.

A few months ago we took 35 Chinese businesses to the Olympic Park. They were really impressed as was I – it’s going to provide a legacy not only for London but in terms of international and regional reach. It’s not only on time but ahead of schedule.

After Shanghai Expo, we went to visit ZTE – a mobile phone and technology company that has 500 operations in over 140 countries. They produce more handsets than Motorola but they are virtually unknown in the UK. Not for long, I imagine.

I’ve never been more convinced by the mutual opportunities open to British and Chinese companies, in no sector more than the ICT.
