Back Injuries During Yoga Practice

These days very common that members having back pain during and after the yoga sessions why ? Because the way of backward bend and forward bend is not right... so they are suffering from back pain.
While backward bending have to bend from the Lower back, and expand your chest and stretch your chest and lower abdomen muscles and bend according to your body limitations, and when you do the front bending then don't bend your back, straightly bend forward from the lower back, if have any spinal injury then you can bend your knees, or the beginners can bend the knees. During front bending try to place your abdomen on your thighs, and then go for further bending. If you are suffering from lower back pain then avoid forward bending and do slightly backward bending and some back muscles relaxing poses, like cat, tiger, cat stretch, cobra etc.

The spinal column is one of the most vital parts of the human body, supporting our trunks and making all of our movements possible. When the spine is injured and its function is impaired the consequences can be painful and even disabling. So many persons are suffering from lower back pain.

Humans are born with 33 separate vertebrae. By adulthood, most have only 24, due to the fusion of the vertebrae in certain parts of the spine during normal development. The lumbar spine consists of 5 vertebrae called L1 through -L5. Below the lumbar spine, nine vertebrae at the base of the spine grow together. Five form the triangular bone called the sacrum. The lowest four vertebrae form the tailbone or coccyx.

The anatomy of the spinal column is extremely well designed to serve many functions. All of the elements of the spinal column and vertebrae serve the purpose of protecting the spinal cord, which provides communication to the brain, mobility and sensation in the body through the complex interaction of bones, ligaments and muscle structures of the back and the nerves that surround it. The back is also the powerhouse for the entire body, supporting our trunks and making all of the movements of our head, arms, and legs possible.

The Vertebral Column (Spinal Column) supports the head and encloses the spinal cord.

The spinal column is comprised of 26 individual bones, these bones are refered to as vertebrae. The spinal column is divided into 5 different areas containing groups of vertebrae and are grouped as follows:

7 cervical vertebrae in the neck.

12 thoracic vertebrae in the upper back corresponding to each pair of ribs.

5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.

5 sacral vertebrae which are fused together to form 1 bone called the sacrum.

4 coccygeal vertebrae that are fused together to form the coccyx or tailbone.

The vertebrae are refered to by their name and number, counting down from the top of the spinal column as follows:

The cervical vertebrae are C1 - C7

The thoracic vertebrae are T1 –T12

The lumbar are L1 – L5

The sacrum and coccyx do not have numbers and each is thought of as one bone. Spinal nerves exit the sacrum and coccyx at levels within the main structure of each vertebra.

Practice Yoga according to your physical limitation, don't go beyond your limitations, try to enjoy the Yoga practice and have a safe and peaceful practice.

Namaste Ji,

Yogi Manu.
