(Corpus Christi)

(Corpus Christi)

Hello again everyone!  As part of our efforts to help our visa applicants better understand the United States, its culture, and its tourist attractions, we are pleased to release the first entry in our “hometown blog” series.  Each month, a Beijing visa officer will write a short blog about his/her home state or city in the United States and share “insider tips” on the best sights, eats, and activities for visitors.  We hope that many of you will consider visiting these destinations, many of which are off the “beaten path” of New York and the West Coast.  The U.S., like China, is a big country, so read the post below, then go out and explore!

Corpus Christi, TX

Texas usually conjures up images of women with big hair, cowboy boots, and guns. Yet the state is so large, that its different regions are really quite unique from one another. I was raised in Corpus Christi, a small city along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, bordered to the east by Padre Island and Mustang Island---as well as Padre Island National Seashore. While Corpus Christi is often overshadowed by Austin, Houston and San Antonio, we have some of the most beautiful beaches along the gulf.  In addition, Eva Longoria, Farah Fawcett and the Tejano singer Selena are all Corpus Christi natives.

Corpus Christi is composed of over sixty percent Hispanics, so some of the best restaurants in the city celebrate that Tex-Mex heritage.  Some of my favorite restaurants to pick up Mexican food include Taqueria Jalisco and La Playa. Whether you’re looking for an authentic tortilla soup, gulf shrimp fajitas, or stuffed jalapenos and avocados – you will not be let down! And don’t forget to wash down the Texas-sized servings with a glass of margarita or a Lone Star Beer!   Since we are on the Gulf of Mexico though, for some fresh seafood, check out Aka Sushi or Water Street Oyster Bar, both located on Water Street, or head to nearby Portland to check out one of the many fresh crab and crawfish joints.

For dessert head to La Palatera to enjoy a fruit cup sprinkled with chile and lime juice or a fresh homemade popsicle made from horchata (a drink made from rice, vanilla and cinnamon).

This is what I would do on my perfect day in Corpus Christi:

Wake up to a view of the beach somewhere on Padre Island.

Head out to Bob Hall Pier for a surf lesson or yoga on the beach. Better yet, grab a kayak and some binoculars and kayak around the inlets on Padre Island for some bird watching.

Head to the JB’s German Bakery & Café on Padre Island to grab some pastries before heading back to the beach to just relax and read a book.

When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to La Playa or Taqueria Jalisco in your wet sandy sandals and enjoy a giant meal.

Head to La Palmera shopping center for the typical American shopping experience and walk off all that guacamole.

Shower and clean up before having dinner at Republic of Texas Steakhouse atop the Omni Hotel building while enjoying a view of the harbor and my medium rare steak, before walking along Ocean Drive to enjoy the night.  But if you don’t need the view and just want the best steak, I would also recommend Niko’s Steakhouse.

If you just can’t get enough of the beach, stop by the Circle K to grab some firewood and head back to the beach set up a bonfire by the sand dunes or just star gaze…

Hope you enjoy my hometown!
