What is a common misperception that many people have about the visa application process?
The biggest misperception I have noticed in my time at the embassy is that applicants think there is a right or wrong answer to every question we ask. If people I interview just give me honest answers and tell me their unrehearsed stories, instead of saying what they think I want to hear, they will have a better chance of getting visa.  I would like applicants to just be themselves at the window, instead of making prepared speeches.  Often times, doing the latter actually makes people seem less credible and may lower their chances of getting their visa applications approved.

Another misperception that people may have is that the majority of applicants we interview get denied visas. In fact, statistics indicate that in Beijing the refusal rate is less than twenty percent!   In actuality, most of the people we interview have a good chance of going to the States. Our job as Consular Officers is not to deny visas but to ensure that everything adds up and that the story simply makes sense.

What is a common misperception that you think many people have about the visa application process?
Many applicants, whether they are repeat or first-time applicants, may be under the mistaken impression that Consular Officers only reluctantly issue visas. In fact, our underlying mission is to facilitate travel to the U.S. for every qualified traveler, and the whole purpose for the interview is to determine whether the applicant’s situation accords with U.S. immigration law. We always strive to conduct our interviews and arrive at our decisions in a calm, courteous manner. Another mistaken belief that many applicants have is that they need a document to prove everything, but in fact, it is the applicants’ overall demonstration of their situation, in terms of the coherence and balance between what they say as well as what documents they bring, that is important. As Consular Officers, we base our decisions on the extent to which the applicants’ demonstration of their overall situation is credible and coherent and if the applicants have convincingly demonstrated that they will return to China. Coming in with fake documents or allowing consultants to create an embellished applicant package does not help in strengthening their cases because we have substantial experience and training that helps us to detect this type of fraud.
