上述结构中的in spite of 是短语介词，despite是介词，其后可接名词或动名词做宾语，但不可接that从句做宾语，因为that引导的名词从句不可做介词的宾语。使用时，需要在in spite of或despite之后加the fact做其宾语，然后再接that从句，此时that从句是the fact的同位语。
