A few years ago when my boys were young, I homeschooled them. Part
of my teaching included community service. At that time the
Collierville Library was looking for volunteers to come to serve
lunch to some elderly people. So we decided to devote every Tuesday
to that. They were a great group of people, all ladies apart from
one gentleman. And they enjoyed my buys very much. The ladies were
talkative. And the man, Mr. Grady, was quiet and gentle. You could
feel his spirit and his eyes were so kind.
He struggled to walk and do some of the simple things we all take
for granted but he never gave up. At times, he would ask for
assistance, and I was always thrilled to help. Despite his physical
need, his mind was sharp, and he loved to play dominos (多米诺骨牌). He
was a natural wiz with numbers, was very patient with my boys and
enjoyed teaching them how to play.
One day I asked Mr. Grady what his condition was exactly. He told
me he had Parkinson’s disease. I truly never gave it another
thought because he was NOT his disease! He was Mr. Grady! A very
sweet yet strong man who had so much to offer to all those he came
into contact with.
Over time I’ve thought back on those days and how glad I am that my
boys got to experience this. When I have days when I struggle, I
think about Mr. Grady and how Parkinson’s disease was just a small
part of who he was.
72.Why did the writer go to the Collierville Library with her
boys?

74.When the writer was told that Mr. Grady had Parkinson’s disease,

Eleven-year-old Evan Green doesn’t want to save just one tree ---
he wants to save a whole rainforest!
In the Redwood City, California, a boy started a group called the
Red Dragon Conservation Team four years ago to do just that. So
far, the team’s members have raised $4,500. That’s enough to
purchase and protect more than 16 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica
through the Center of Ecosystem Survival.
“Every year, thousands of square miles of rainforest are destroyed
worldwide. Logging (伐木) and farming are mostly likely to blame,”
scientists say. The loss is terrible news for animals and people.
Even though rainforests cover less than 2 percent of the earth,
they are home to half the world’s plants and animals. Rainforests
also provide water and help control the earth’s climate.
Evan’s work to save the rainforests recently earned him a Barton
prize for Young Heroes. The prizes are given to children or
teenagers who have made a positive difference in the world. Evan’s
goal is “to save enough rainforests to last forever”. He won’t have
to do it alone. His actions have already inspired other kids to
chip in. One girl asked for donations instead of presents on her
birthday. She raised $850. Other kids are starting their own
conservation teams.
Evan says everyone can help the planet --- even by taking small
steps such as recycling. He and his family try to make a difference
every day. “We recycle, we try to limit our garbage, we’ve been
walking a little more, and we buy local food,” Evan
said.

Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable
heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra
heading which you do not need.
“Thanks” to the seasonal change, half of my class went down with
colds and flu. You can hear coughs and sneezes everywhere, and the
number of suffering students keeps climbing.
A close friend of mine, however, survived the fierce battle,
despite the fact that he was surrounded by “victims” all day long.
I am not surprised, because we’ve been friends for ages, and he
seldom gets sick. The following is his advice.
80
A long-distance of run in the morning is a good choice. It not only
makes you energized for the rest of the day, but also helps to
develop good health for the rest of your life.
81
A balanced diet is essential for health. We should eat a variety of
food everyday, because different foods contain different nutrition:
rice provides sugar, meat contains energy and fat, vegetables are
rich in vitamins and cellulose (纤维素), etc. Fruit and yogurt are
also highly recommended, because the former is known for its
Vitamin C, and the latter, calcium, which plays a vital role in the
growth of our bodies.
82
Water is one of the most important component of our bodies, and is
essential for out metabolism (新陈代谢). We often run out of water
without notice, so we should drink water even if we are not
thirsty. Also, when we get sick, we should drink more, because when
our bodies fight against viruses, it causes us to lose water.
83
Many diseases like the flu are very likely to be spread among
people, so we should keep away from those who are sick. During
class breaks, go out and get some fresh air to keep away form the
viruses, and open window to get better air circulation.
84
A person in low spirits is more likely to get sick. A happy mood
not only helps people fend off viruses, but also is the best cure
for most illness.
Follow the above rules, and you’ll become as strong as a bull!
Remember: diseases and viruses are not that frightening as long as
you are well prepared.

you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Ladies and gentleman: The plane is about to depart Beijing to Paris, France. And the plane will take a short stop in Karachi, Pakistan. If you look at the card in your seat pocket, you will see where the emergency exists are. In case of an emergency, an oxygen mask will come down from overhead. Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
London taxi drivers know the capital like the back of their
hands. No matter how small or unclear the street is, the driver
will be able to get you there without any trouble. The reason
London taxi drivers are so efficient is that they all have gone
through a very tough training period to get a special taxi driving
license. During this period, which can take two to four years, the
would-be taxi driver has to learn the most direct route to every
single road and to every important building in London. To achieve
this, most learners go around the city on small motorbikes
practicing how to move to and from different points of the city.
Learner taxi drivers are tested several times during the training
period by government officers. The exams are terrible experience.
The officers ask you “How do you get from Birmingham palace to the
Tower of London?” and you have to take them there in the direct
line. When you get to the tower, they won’t say “Well done.” They
will quickly move on to the next question. After five or six
questions, they will just say “See you in two months time.” And
then you know the exam is over. Learner drivers are not allowed to
work and earn money as drivers. Therefore, many of them keep their
earlier jobs until they have obtained the license. The training can
cost quite a lot because learners have to pay for their own
expenses on the tests and the medical exam.

16.
Section C
Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations.
The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each
conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with
the information you hear. Write your answers on your answer
sheet.
Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following
conversation.
W: Have you ever traveled much in Britain?
M: No, not much. But I travel quite a lot in London every
day.
W: What do you think of the London traffic?
M: I think the London underground is OK because it’s fast and
comfortable. I also like London buses, especially for short
journeys.
W: But don’t you think the buses are rather slow?
M: Yes, I do. Particularly in rush hours.
W: What about London taxis?
M: Taxis often get us in traffic jams, and besides, they’re too
expensive.
W: Well, what do you think is the best way to travel in
London?
M: The underground, I think.
Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.
M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest? I recently had a
chance to go to Muri Woods National Monument, north of San
Francisco.
W: I have never seen a redwood tree. I can hardly imagine how big
they are.
M: The coastal redwoods are the tallest living things. Some are
more than 350 feet high. But none of the trees in Muri Woods are
that tall. You have to go further north in California to see the
tallest trees.
W: You said the Muri Woods is near San Francisco? I guess it must
be quite a tourist attraction.
M: Yes, it’s less than an hour’s driver away, so it’s easy to get
there.
W: I have heard that many redwoods are thousands of years old. Are
the ones in Muri Woods that old?
M: The oldest documented age for a costal redwood is more than
2,000 years. The trees in Muri Woods are 400-800 years old.
W: why have they survived so long?
M: They have remarkable resistance to forest fires. Their tough and
thick bark protects trees during a fire. The coastal redwoods also
like a wet and foggy climate.
W: Then, since Muri Woods is near foggy San Francisco, it must be
ideal for the trees’ survival. I can’t wait to go there and see
them.
