A. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容, 选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)
Perhaps you have heard about a man named Noah who built a huge boat to escape the flood. In this legend (传说) of the great flood, water covered all the land, killing most of the people and animals on Earth. Only Noah's wife, three sons, and the sons' wives, survived the flood along with all of the animals on his boat. This legend of Noah and his family is familiar to many people. But it is not the only legend about a great flood. Actually, many cultures have similar stories about a great flood that wiped out almost everyone on Earth.
In the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian legend of the flood, Noah was warned by God that a great flood would kill every human and animal on land. God told Noah to build the boat that would save his family and two of every animal. In a Hindu legend of the flood, a fish warned a man about the flood, and only the man was saved. Then the gods made a woman for this man, and the man and woman had many children. The Greek, Roman, and Chinese legends of the flood say only people on the highest mountain survived the flood. In Scandinavian and Celtic legends, the water of the flood was actually the blood of a giant (巨人). When the giant was killed, its body became the Earth, and its blood covered all of the land. There are so Incan, Mayan, and American Indian legends about a great flood. In each of these legends, a few people live through the flood by climbing mountains or by building boats.
Many people today believe the great flood is only a legend. However, other people say that the striking similarities (相似) among all of the flood legends suggest a real flood covered the Earth at some point long ago. In fact, some scientists speculate (推断) that the ancient flood waters are now frozen in glaciers (冰川) at the poles of the Earth. But why do the legends disagree with each other? The flood happened long before humans could write, so the story of the flood could only be passed down through generations by oral retellings. As the story was passed by word of mouth, it may have changed as various cultures learned the story. That may explain why some parts of the legends differ. Through careful examination of the similar elements in these legends, however, certain facts about an ancient terrible flood maybe revealed (显示).

Successful language learning is ___83___ learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. When talking about the UK, the first things that come to most people's minds are Big Ben, the British Museum or Buckingham Palace. However, after my first visit to UK during the summer vacation, I think one thing should be added to the 1___86___ street artists.
In York, a city in the northeast of
England, I met a "purple man". He was in the middle of
the street and was pretending to ride a bike. The man was painted
purple all over his body. He
held a lovely little dog in his arms.
Most of the time, the "purple man" stood there w___87___ making a move except to wave to passers-by now and then. When people went close to him, he would make fun of them by putting paint in their hair. Some fan away to avoid being painted while some accepted it with a smile. From the collection pot beside his foot, I could see that this was h___88___ he made a living ―by taking photos with tourists.
Another performer who impressed me was a man I met in Edinburgh. He stood quite still and was simply staring at the ground with several flyers (传单) in his hand. When a passer-by took a flyer, he would dance for a while and-then stand still again.
Not all street artists are performing for m___89___ I saw another man just lying on the street; facing the ground as if listening to the earth. I guessed lie was listening to the heartbeat of nature.
In my opinion, these performers just wanted to e___90___ themselves in their own ways.
Before I went to Britain, I had heard that the people there were quite serious and somewhat dull, always wearing dark suits. But what I saw on the - streets changed my idea' about them c ___91___. These people are interesting and full of unexpectedly good ideas. They do what they want and don't care about other people's-doubts or criticisms.
Seeing is believing―that's another thing I learned from my trip, and from the a ___92___ street artists.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分)
There was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted to study at the University of Sydney, otherwise known as USYD, the "Oxford of the southern hemispheres (半球)” or simply "Sydney". Founded in 1850, USYD is the oldest university, in Australia and Oceania. It is also among the top three universities in the southern hemisphere.
As soon as I received my acceptance (接受) letter, I began dreaming about the historic sandstone buildings and green lawns. I looked forward to talking about politics and culture in the many trendy cafes on campus. I wanted to sit in the halls where prime ministers, Nobel laureates (获奖者), medical pioneers, and Oscar winners once sat.
I studied media at Sydney for four years. My favorite thing was bumping into (遇见) familiar faces as I walked from class to class. Despite having around 50,000 students, you always meet people you know, because the students are all really friendly.
I made one of my life-long friends at
the university―Jacqueline. We met during a lecture in
first year. From then on we started meeting up for coffees during
breaks and hanging out in our
free time. We became best friends. After we graduated, we traveled
around Italy for three weeks
together.
These are the close relationships that the university encourages. Sydney offers a unique campus experience that allows students to be sociable as well as academically (学业的) strong.
The university is home to over 200 clubs and societies. There is a group for every hobby and interest that you can think of —circus (马戏团) society, radio society, commerce (商业) society, and drama society to name but a few.
I joined the commerce society even
though I didn't study commerce. I wanted to go to the
events because most of my friends studied the subject - it was a
great way to meet people outside
of my own degree.
USYD attracts some of the smartest students from Australia and abroad with its popular law, arts, commerce, and engineering degrees. Many students go on to become leaders in their industries. It's nice to think that one day I may write an article about one of my friends.
92. Why is USYD called the "Oxford of the southern hemisphere"?
