    We officially welcomed Palm into the HP family. So this week, I wanted to take a look back at one of HP’s Windows CE-based Palm-sized PCs, the Jornada 420.

Jornada 420于1999年2月发布，是惠普第一台口袋大小的PC。它是首个Microsoft Windows CE口袋型PC之一，带有一个彩色屏幕，重8.81盎司，体积5.1x3.2x0.9英寸，一只手可以轻松拿起。
Launched in February 1999, the Jornada 420 was HP's first pocket-size PC, and it was one of the first Microsoft Windows CE pocket-size PCs boasting a color screen. Weighing 8.81 ounces and measuring 5.1 inches by 3.2 inches by 0.9 inches, it sure was a handful. In a good way.

清晰的彩色屏幕显然是这款设备的亮点。无论使用触摸屏还是机身上的快捷按键，你都会轻松回到主屏幕。当你阅读文档或电子邮件时，可以把透明的屏幕保护罩翻转过来，以避免不小心碰到触摸屏。另外一个很棒又很方便的功能是它内置了麦克风（以及专用的录音按键），你可以轻而易举的录下通话录音，然后传给PC。
    That crisp color screen was obviously the star. Whether you used the stylus on the touch screen or the shortcut buttons lining the 420, you’d keep going back to that display. And when you just wanted to read a document or email, a clear protective screen cover would flip into place so that you couldn’t accidentally tap the touchscreen surface. Another big, handy feature was a built-in mic (and dedicated record button) that made it a breeze to capture conversations, then transfer them to your PC.

    If you wanted to be super-productive, the Jornada 420 had full e-mail capabilities as well as a Motorola pager module that allowed immediate delivery of up-to-date information to the user without having to plug in a modem.

它还有其它创新的应用软件，帮助商务人士减少生活中的时间紧张感。“频道”功能让你可以下载指定网站的信息进行离线阅读。LandWare公司提供的OmniSolve计算器软件有着复杂的数学和商业计算功能。还有一些有趣的东西：

It also had some innovative – and helpful – software to make the businessperson’s life a little less hectic for the time. The “Channels” feature allowed you to download sites and information for offline reading. OmniSolve from LandWare came onboard, performed complex mathematical and business calculations. You know, fun stuff.  But here’s one feature, as pulled from the manual:

    Solitaire—Passes the time at the airport, on the train, or during a not-so-interesting meeting or lecture.” AMEN! Not that I ever tested that app at the office…I swear.

那一年年底的时候，惠普与微软、米高梅合作，在007电影《黑日危机》中展示了Jornada 430se。该影片于1999年11月19日上映。惠普在拉斯维加斯的Comdex大展上向媒体和分析师们预放了该电影。影片中出现的430se是一个特制版本，它相对于420有一些微小的升级，包括了金色蚀刻花纹和一个内置MP3播放器。在1999年开始发售时，它的售价大概500多美元。
    Later that year, we teamed with Microsoft and MGM to feature the Jornada 430se in the James Bond movie," The World Is Not Enough," which was scheduled for release Nov. 19, 1999.  HP pre-screened the movie for press and analysts at Comdex in Las Vegas., The 430se was a special edition that was used in the movie. It had some minor upgrades from the 420, and included gold etching and a built-in MP3 player. When it shipped in 1999, it sold for a little over $500.

    In the technology world, though, things were accelerating at an insane rate. The Bluetooth spec was announced. Filesharing became a household name with Napster. Meanwhile, the “Melissa” email virus infects more than 1 million computers and causes $80 million in damage around the world.

但是谁能想到，当年最大的问题来自于“千年虫”。很多公司开始陷入恐慌，人们害怕到2000年1月1日到来时，电脑会发生“爆炸”。不过在对电脑进行更新后，天没有塌下来，世界也没有因为电脑故障而终止。
    But by far the biggest bug was the hoopla around the Y2K problem. Companies began to panic that at midnight on January 1st, 2000 would cause electric and financial PCs to sputter. After updating computers, the sky didn’t fall. The world didn’t end by computer malfunction.
