Having read the blogs and discussion about
"which tee to play", I feel strange that it is a question for many
people. With an official handicap system, it
should be clear for everybody to play from the right tee for him or
her.
In Sweden, most golf clubs require that you have an offical
handicap (highest 36) in order to play on the golf
court, and some difficult courts require maximum
24 for men. To obtain the official handicap, you
have to take a training course by an authorized
pro in a golf club. In the training course, you
learn basic rules and how to behave on golf court
and basic techniques. When you have passed theory
and technique tests, you get a green
card so you can play on golf
courts under supervision of someone who has an
offical handicap. After you have
played three rounds with results
better than required minimum points, you need to
join some golf club to become a member, and the
club can register you so that
you get your official handicap
(starting from 36). Later, your official handicap will be revised
by the club or
the computer system of
Swedish Golf Association when you register your
golf results. Your handicap will decrease if you get
points higher than 36, but it will increase if
your points are below
30. Normally you can decrease from high to medium
handicap level, but it is difficult to further decrease. I heard
that to keep handicap below 15, you need to to
play frequently without
interruption.
The golf courts in Sweden have white, yellow,
blue and red tees. Only elite man players start
from white tee, while most of men start from yellow tee. Elite
woman players start from blue tee (I maybe wrong),
while most of women start from red tee. All the
golf courts have their individual slop table depending on the
difficult level of th court. From the
table, you can find how many extra strokes you
have on the particular court. The
score card you get from the club when you check in before
the round also shows your extra strokes. The
interval between two starting
times is mostly 7, 8, 9 or 10 minutes, depending
on the difficulty of the
court. To avoid too slow speed by
a group of high handicap players, usually the booking system has a
requirement of maximum total handicap of a party
(max. 4 persons). This ensures that at least there is someone in
the party who is familar with the rules. I have seen many single
handicap men players starting from the yellow tee, except those who
are playing real competitions. It is very
common that experienced low
handicap players help high handicap players to
find balls and answer their questions. It is also a rule that you
don't give other people instruction unless the
person ask you (to give instruction is the job of the pro).
It is quite cheap to play golf in Sweden. The annual membership
fee for many clubs is only one to
several thousands kronor (close to yuen) and for
that you play for free in your home club. The
green fee for guests is normlly a few handreds
kronors. No cady works at golf clubs. To ride golf
chart you need a letter from doctor which states that you have
medical reason for the need of golf
chart. In general, most
people here behave very gentle on
golf courts, and it is enjoyable to play golf
here. The only problem is that summer is short, and you can't play
golf in winter
period.
