西安至宝鸡高速公路是【国家高速公路网规划】中横向线连云港至霍尔果斯高速公路（G30）在陕西境内的重要组成部分，也是陕西省交通运输的主动脉和关中区域的“黄金大通道”。自1995年12月建成通车以来，西宝高速公路极大的改善了陕西省西部区域通行环境，对推动陕西、乃至我国西部地区经济发展发挥了重要作用。 西宝高速公路改扩建工程东起西安绕城高速公路阿房宫立交，经咸阳市、杨凌示范区，止于宝鸡市石嘴头，途径4市11县（区），主线全程157.756公里。 2008年12月举行开工典礼，2009年4月陆续开始实质性施工，建设工期为三年，兴平至虢镇东扩建段于2011年11月建成通车。
