Keshav Goel, 10/18/2015,  Master of Finance 2016

Outside the classroom: School trek to meet Warren Buffett

By Keshav Goel, October 18, 2015

MFin Class of 2016 1

Of all the amazing things that have happened in the past few months, this one is definitely going to rank in the top-tier. A group of 20 Sloanies visited Omaha, Nebraska to meet the Oracle of Omaha. Everyone was pretty excited about the event and Mr. Warren Buffett definitely didn’t disappoint us.

All of us reached Omaha a day before the event. I was on one of the last flights out of Boston (as I had my proseminar presentation). We gathered at the hotel lobby after breakfast the next day and boarded our cabs to the venue. We were seated in a hall along with students from a few other schools, eagerly waiting for the session to begin. On offer were light refreshments (as expected Coca-Cola and other Coke products were available in plenty!). Mr. Buffett entered the scene and was greeted with a huge applause. He welcomed us and delved straight into Q&A. The schools took turns in asking questions, which ranged from his views on investment strategies to his life philosophy. I was amazed by his sense of humor and the energy he radiated. It was easy to see why this man is so passionate about investing. He was very excited and engaged throughout the event and each of his responses left a strong impression on me.

Some of the most important takeaways for me were his quotes. He urged us all to follow our passion and fulfill our potential. He also talked about the the Giving Pledge (http://givingpledge.org/) and why he considers it as one of his most important contributions to our society. He also encouraged us to read the letter titled ‘My Third Son’ from Li Ka Shing (http://www.lksf.org/english-my-third-son/). He candidly shared his views on what had worked well for him, what hadn’t and what we could learn from his experiences as students. He drew on a lot of experiences from his personal life and his association with Mr. Charlie Munger. Mr. Buffett demonstrated his immense love for the businesses he has invested in by going back to his thoughts around some of his investments, be it Precision Castparts, Krat-Heinz or the Coca-Cola Company.

Thereafter, he took us for lunch to Piccolo Pete’s restaurant, which is one of his favorite places in Omaha. We presented a small token of appreciation to Mr. Buffett for inviting us to Omaha. He gladly accepted it and posed for a group photograph which many of us our going to cherish for years to come.

We then visited Oriental Trading Company as part of our Berkshire Hathaway tour. Steve Mendlik, CFO and COO of the company, walked us through the company’s history, its business and association with Berkshire Hathaway. He and his team also arranged a tour of their massive 750,000 square feet facility for us. Thereafter, we went back to the hotel to pick our bags and leave for the airport to cap one of the most exciting days of our lives.

As I write about this experience, I also can’t help but think about it in the context of how such experiences are an integral part of my Sloan experience. I believe it is the activities both inside and outside the classroom that make MIT Sloan such an attractive proposition for prospective students. I would like to thank MIT Sloan for presenting me with this opportunity and Mr. Warren Buffett for being such a gracious host.
