1)楚庄王谋事而当①,群臣莫能逮,退朝而有忧色。申公巫进曰:“君退朝而有忧色,何也?”楚王曰:“吾闻之,诸侯自择师者王,自择友者霸,足己而君臣莫之若者亡。今以不谷②之不肖而议于朝,且群臣莫能逮,吾国其几于亡矣,吾是以有忧色也。”

2)孔子见齐景公,景公致廪丘①以为养,孔子辞(1)不受,入谓弟子曰:“吾闻君子当功以受禄。今说景公,景公未之行而赐之廪丘,其不知丘亦甚矣。”令弟子趣驾,辞(2)而行。孔子布衣也,万乘②难与比行,三王之佐不显焉,取舍不苟也夫!

3)石奢者,楚昭王相也。坚直廉正,无所阿避。行县,道有杀人者,相追之,乃其父也。纵其父,还而自系焉。使人言之王曰:“杀人者,臣之父也。夫以父立政,不孝也;废法纵罪,非忠也。臣罪当死。”王曰:“追而不及,不当伏罪,子其治事矣。”石奢曰:“不私其父,非孝子也;不奉王法,非忠臣也。王赦其罪,上惠也;伏诛而死,臣职也。”遂不受令,自刎而死。

4)太宗初即位,务止奸吏,或闻诸曹案典,多有受赂者,乃遣人以财物试之。有司门令史受馈绢一匹,太宗怒,将杀之。矩进谏曰:“此人受赂,诚合重诛。但陛下以物试之,即行极法,所谓陷人以罪,恐非导德齐礼之义。”太宗纳其言,因召百僚谓曰:“裴矩遂能廷折,不肯面从。每事如此,天下何忧不治!”贞观元年卒,赠绛州刺史,谥曰敬。

务:致力。   受:接受。    诚:确实,的确。   因:于是。   廷:当廷,名作状。

5)木之生,或孽①而殇,或拱②而夭;幸而至于任为栋梁,则伐;不幸而为风之所拔,水之所漂,或破折或腐;幸而得不破折不腐,则为人之所材,而有斧斤之患。其最幸者,漂沉汩没③于湍沙之间,不知其几百年,而其激射啮食之余,或仿佛于山者,则为好事者取去,强之以为山,然后可以脱泥沙而远斧斤。而荒江之④,如此者几何,不为好事者所见,而为樵夫野人⑤所薪者,何可胜数?则其最幸者之中,又有不幸者焉。

6)善呼者

公孙龙①在赵之时,谓弟子曰:“人而无能者,龙不能与游。”有客衣带索而见曰:“臣能呼。”公孙龙顾谓弟子曰:“门下故有能呼者乎?”对曰:“无有。”公孙龙曰:“与之弟子籍!”后数日,往说燕王。至于河上,而航在一汜②。使善呼者呼之,一呼而航者来。故曰:圣人之处世,不逆有伎能之士。

7)废弈向学

魏甄琛举秀才入都,颇以弈棋废日,至通夜不止,令苍头(仆役,仆人)执烛,或时睡顿,则杖之。奴曰:“郎君辞父母仕宦,若读书,执烛即不敢辞,今乃围棋日夜不息,岂是向京之意乎?琛怅然惭感,遂诣赤彪(人名)许,假书研习,闻见日优。

8)牛不能生马

齐桓公出猎,逐鹿而走入山谷之中,见一老公而问之,曰:“是为何谷?”对曰:“为愚公之谷。”桓公曰:“何故?”对曰:“以臣名之。”桓公曰:“今视公之仪状,非愚人也,何为以公名?”对曰:“臣请陈之,臣故畜zì,雌的、 母的牲畜。)牛,生子而大,卖之而买驹。少年曰:‘牛不能生马。’遂持驹去。傍邻闻之,以臣为愚,故名此谷为愚公之谷。”

9)高山流水

伯牙子鼓琴,其友钟子期听之,方鼓而志在太山(即“泰山”),钟子期曰:“善哉乎鼓琴,巍巍乎若太山!”少选(一会儿)之间,而志在流水,钟子期复曰:“善哉乎鼓琴,汤汤乎若流水!”钟子期死,伯牙破琴绝弦,终身不复鼓琴,以为世无足为鼓琴者。非独鼓琴若此也,贤者亦然。

10)曹玮用计

旨:味美。   困:困惑。  反:返回,引申为反省。  长:增长。

汉六年,人有上书告楚王韩信反。高帝问诸将,诸将曰:“亟发兵坑竖子耳。”高帝默然。问陈平,平固辞谢,曰:“诸将云何?”上具告之。陈平曰:“人之上书言信反,有知之者乎?”曰:“未有。”曰:“信知之乎?”曰:“不知。”陈平曰:“陛下精兵孰与楚?”上曰:“不能过。”平曰:“陛下将用兵有能过韩信者乎?”上曰:“莫及也。”平曰:“今兵不如楚精,而将不能及,而举兵攻之,是趣之战也,窃为陛下危之。”上曰:“为之奈何?”平曰:“古者天子巡狩,会诸侯。南方有云梦,陛下弟出伪游云梦,会诸侯于陈。陈,楚之西界,信闻天子以好出游,其势必无事而郊迎谒。谒,而陛下因禽之,此特一力士之事耳。”高帝以为然。

房玄龄与高士廉偕行,遇少府少监窦德素,问之曰:“北门近来有何营造?”德素以闻太宗。太宗谓玄龄、士廉曰:“卿但知南衙事,我北门小小营造,何妨卿事?”玄龄等拜谢。魏征进曰:“臣不解陛下责,亦不解玄龄等谢。既任大臣,即陛下股肱耳目,有所营造,何容不知。责其访问官司,臣所不解。陛下所为若是,当助陛下成之;所为若非,当奏罢之。此乃事君之道。玄龄等问既无罪,而陛下责之,玄龄等不识所守,臣实不喻。”太宗深纳之。

臣闻古之君人(君人:人君,国君。),有以千金求千里马者,三年不能得。涓人(涓人:国君的近侍,又名“中涓”,即阉人。)言于君曰:“请求之。”君遣之。三月得千里马;马已死,买其骨五百金,反以报君。君大怒曰:“所求者生马,安事死马?而损五百金!”涓人对曰:“死马且买之五百金,况生马乎?天下必以王为能市马。马今至矣。”于是不能期年,千里之马者三。

常羊学射于屠龙子朱,屠龙子朱曰:“若欲闻射乎?楚王田于云梦①,使虞人②起禽而射之。禽发,鹿出于王左,麋交于王右。王引弓欲射,有鹄拂王旃③而过,翼若垂云。王注矢于弓,不知其所射。养叔进曰:‘臣之射也,置一叶于百步之外而射之,十发而十中,如使置十叶焉,则中不中非臣所能必矣。’”
