Dear XX,

I have learned that you returned to your old, unacceptable habits of not reporting to the lab on time and spending hours and hours on the internet, cell phone, and texting, when you actually should be conducting research. This is getting very frustrating not only for me but also for your peers, who apply themselves pretty hard in earning their advanced degrees and/or conducting research.

Now that you chose to act like an immature child let me talk to you like I would talk to an immature child:

1.  Chose now whether you want to continue your graduate studies or whether you would prefer to stay in China and not return to Lincoln. Your research project is not a challenging one, but is important to the lab. If you decide not to continue your studies please let me know by this Friday (5 p.m. local time), and I will pass your project on to a new student.

2.  If you decide to continue your studies, you will need to report to the lab by 8:00 a.m. (not 8:05 a.m.), take a lunch break of no more than 1 hour, and leave no earlier than 5:00 p.m. I do not consider it a great achievement if you managed to adhere to this rule, but you’d meet minimum requirements for a graduate student. The time that you spend in the lab will need to be devoted to research-related activities. Do your homework and class-related activities at home.

3.  UNL is a Research I university in the Big 10 and you are not anywhere near expectations in this environment. You are currently tied for last place among all the student’s that I have had in the lab since joining UNL in spring of 2001.

4.  If you can’t live without constantly surfing the net, chatting on the phone, or sending texts and other personal, you may have an addiction problem, and I would encourage you to seek professional advice.

5.  I am still waiting for you to send me your class schedule for fall semester.  Remember that I had asked all grad. students in the lab to send it my way? Whenever you are not in class, you are expected to be in the lab.

6.  If you have a doctor’s appointment at 11 a.m., there is no reason for not coming to the lab in the hours leading up to your appointment.

7.  As you probably noticed I copied all lab members on this email. If you decided to continue your studies at UNL, I will ask them to report any further misconduct at your end directly to me, so that I have you removed from the program. In that case, you should not blame them but exclusively yourself.

8.  Nobody in the lab has the time to police your attendance and activities and/or to micromanage you research.

I am really wondering how you expect to get through life with your attitude. At some point in life you will need to learn to accept responsibility.

Please let me know how, and if, you would like to proceed.

Regards,

XX XXX
