(I AM TOO HOT!)
2012 is so far the hottest year on record in the United States. Today I received an email from The Climate Reality Project, an organization with a goal of helping people understand how climate change impacts their everyday lives and the need for action. Last week, they took their "I'm Too Hot!" campaign into Austin, Texas -- where the temperature shot past 100 degrees each day. It was a success, and they want to take their "I'm Too Hot!" campaign to more cities where the temperatures are soaring.
In response to this worthwhile campaign, I translated my Chinese poem about the recent draught into English and am posting it here.
DRY SEASON
even the shadows
are dried to the bone
their whiskers sparse and brownish
with no dewdrops to moisten their throats
birds won't come to the window
to chirp
to waken dreams
to inspire
holding a dry-up pen
a poet stares at the blank sky
where not a single trace of cloud
is in sight
don't expect
tears of joy
anytime soon
