The Family Jewels
Lewis
Burns came from a poor family. He grew up with very little money.
As a child, Lewis said to himself, "When I grow up, I will not be
poor. When I grow up, I will have a fine car. My wife will will
wear jewels. We will have a fine home."
Lewis
had this dream as he grew up. He went to school until his father
died. Then Lewis had to grow up in hurry. He quit school and went
to work.
Lewis
worked for the city on the sewers. He was on a work crew. The crew
of workers cleaned the sewers. Dirt and leaves got into the sewers.
The work crew used a machine to remove the dirt and leaves. The
machine threw the dirt and leaves into a truck.
It
was dirty job. But Lewis went to work every day in clean clothes.
The crew laughed at him. "Look at Lewis," the said. "He looks like
a cool cat in the morning. But by evening he looks like a sewer
rat!"
"That's OK," said Lewis. "I won't be a sewer rat
forever."
When
Lewis was 20, he met Judy. Judy's family wasn't rich. But they had
more money than Lewis's family. Judy grew up with nice clothes and
other things she wanted.
"I love Judy," Lewis said to himself. "But she
won't want to marry a sewer rat. I must stop seeing
Judy."
Judy had another view. She told her parents,
"Lewis may by poor, but he is a fine man. He loves me, and I love
him. If we both work hard, we will have enough money to
marry."
Judy and Lewis got married. Judy worked until
Lewis Jr. was born. Then two years later, baby Luke was
born.
A few years passed. Lewis still worked on the
city crew. The children grew bigger. Judy stayed at home with
them.
Judy looked for ways to save money. She never
threw anything away. She never threw food way. She used leftovers
for another meal. She never threw old clothes away. She used them
to make clothes for Lewis Jr. and Luke.
The burns family was getting by. They had
enough money to live on, but they didn't own their home. They
didn't have a car. They had enough food to eat, but Judy didn't
wear fine jewels. Sometimes Lewis remembered his old
dream.
One hot day, as Lewis came up the steps, he
heard Luke crying. Judy was giving dinner to the children. "Chew
your meat well," she said to Luke. "Chew your meat, or you will
choke on it."
"I don't like this meat," said the
boy.
"I worked hard to buy that meat, so eat it!"
Lewis yelled. "And do what your mother says! Chew it well!" After
he yelled at his son, Lewis felt bad. But he didn't say anything
until dinner was over.
After dinner, the family sat on the steps. It
was cooler there. They sat on the steps and had a cool drink. They
watched the traffic go by.
"You don't have much of a life in this hot
city," Lewis said to Judy. "I wanted to give you a fine home and
jewels. But I haven't. We are nearly as poor as my parents were.
And we will never be rich."
Judy hugged her husband and kissed him. Then
she hugged her two boys. "These are my jewels, Lewis," she said.
"You and the boys are my jewels. I am a happy wife and mother. We
are rich, not poor."
