Getting Laid Off
It was the middle of November, and Isabel was
looking for a a part-time job. She went to the shopping mall and
filled out several applications. Soon, she was hired at a
clothing store called Sheila's Fashions. Isable understood that her
position was only temporary. In January, after the holidays, she
expected to get laid off along with several other
workers.
Most of Isabel's co-workers at Sheila's Fashions
were very nice. But there was an evening manager, Victoria, who was
very unpleasant. For one thing, Victoria continually reminded
Isabel and the other temporary workers that they were going to get
laid off. "Please organize the stockroom before your get laid off,"
she said. Or "Please finish the inventory before you get
laid off." Isabel thought Victoria's comments were very
insensitive.
After Isabel got laid off, it wasn't long before
she found another job. Mason's Jewelry Store at the mall needed a
part-time worker in January. Fortunately, Isabel's work experience
at Sheila's Fashions helped her to get the job. Isabel was happy at
Mason's Jewelry Store. And the evening manager was a very pleasant
person.
One evening, Isabel was very surprised to see
Victoria walk into Mason's Jewelry Store. "Hello," said Isabel,
politely. "Can I help you with something?"
"I'd like to fill out a job application," said
Victoria. "They didn't need an evening manager at Sheila's Fashions
anymore. I got laid off."
