The two states are separated by the Tug river, and the McCoys lived on the Kentucky side, the Hatfields on the West Virginia side. The Hatfields had 13 children, and the McCoys had 15. The Civil War divided families everywhere – the South had many sympathizers同情者 in the North, and vice-versa反之亦然
. In that region, right in between the North and South, brothers often joined opposite armies. These mountain men didn’t often get involved使参与, 牵涉 with politics 政治活动, but the Hatfields (and most of the people around there) were all yankee美国北方诸州的人-haters怀恨在心者, and the McCoys were sympathetic to the Union. In 1863, the war came to their land, and there were night raids突然袭击 on the farms. McCoys often raided Hatfield, and vice-versa. In 1863, Harmon McCoy joined the Union army. When he returned home, his family was cold to him, and one of the Hatfields threatened恐吓, 威胁him. Soon after that, when he was in the woods, a few Hatfields hunted him down and sadistically虐待狂地killed him.
The did not result in war, but in 1878, Old man McCoy accused指责, 谴责; 控告a Hatfield of stealing a pig; soon after, the McCoy boys killed another Hartield.
Two years later, a Hatfield son fell in love with a McCoy daughter, and they eloped私奔. Then the boy left his lover, when she was pregnant – and he married a different McCoy girl.
By the time the fued was over, there were 11 dead, and over twenty wounded. Houses had been burned down, and children had been murdered in front of their parents. The militia民兵组织, 民兵from both states had been called in, and the governors地方长官; 州长had threatened恐吓, 威胁to start another civil war. Finally all the Hatfield and McCoy men were rounded up使聚拢; 围捕, brought to trial审判, 审理, and many went to jail监狱, in 1901.
