本诗选旨在不仅为国内一般读者参考、借鉴，而且供写诗、谈诗者提供欣赏西方诗的一本入门读物，列举英国诗人莎士比亚时代起到20世纪30年代末止，各个阶段、各种流派或倾向的一些代表性作品或样品，系统、有自己的见解。
本诗选采用原诗的文本跟译文对照排印，对诗文、译文其短长、得失一目了然。
