HE THAT LOVES A ROSY CHEEK
Thomas Carew

He that loves a rosy cheek
Or a coral lip admires,
Or from star-like eyes doth seek
Fuel to maintain his fires;
As old Time makes these decay,
So his flames must waste away.

But a smooth and steadfast mind,
Gentle thoughts, and calm desires,
Hearts with equal love combined,
Kindle never-dying fires:——
Where these are not, I despise
Lovely cheeks or lips or eyes.

有人为之热;

TO LUCASTA, GOING TO THE WARS

Richard Lovelace

Tell me not, Sweet, I am unkind,
  That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind,
  To war and arms I fly.

True, a new mistress now I chase,
  The first foe in the field;
And with a stronger faith embrace
  A sword, a horse, a shield.

Yet this inconstancy is such
  As you too shall adore;
I could not love thee, Dear, so much,
  Loved I not Honour more.

是战场上首遇的敌人;

你也会加以崇敬;

 THE PAPS OF DANA

James Stephens

The mountains stand and stare around,
  They are far too proud to speak,
Altho'they are rooted in the ground
  Up they go,peak after peak,
Beyond the tallest house,and still
  Soaring over tree and hill
Until you'd think they'd never stop
  Going up,top over top,
Into the clouds——still I mark
  That a sparrow pr a lark
Flying just as high can sing
  As if he'd not done anything.
I think the mountains ought to be
  Taught a little modesty.

 WINTER MOON

Evelyn Scott

A little white thistle moon
Blown over the cold crags and fens:
A little white thistle moon
Blown across the frozen heather.

 WINDOW

Carl Sandburg

Night from a railroad car window
Is a great, dark, soft thing
Broken across with slashes of light.

 THE OUTCAST

A.E

Sometimes when alone
At the dark close of day,
Men meet an outlawed majesty
And hurry away.

They come to the lighted house;
They talk to their dear;
They crucify the mystery
With words of good cheer.

When love and life are over,
And flight's at an end,
On the outcast majesty
They lean as a friend.

灯火家中归;
亲人共谈笑;

 THE MOUNTAINS ARE A LONELY FOLK

Hamlin Garland

The mountains they are silent folk;
They stand afar -- alone,
And the clouds that kiss their brows at night
Hear neither sigh nor groan.
Each bears him in his ordered place
As soldiers do, and bold and high
They fold their forests round their feet
And bolster up the sky.

山岳他们是沉默的好汉;

 WHITECHAPEL

Richard Aldington

Noise;
Iron hoofs, iron wheels, iron din
Of drays and trams and feet passing;
Iron
Beaten to a vast mad cacophony.

In vain the shrill, far cry
Of swallows sweeping by;
In vain the silence and green
Of meadows Apriline;
In vain the clear white rain --

Soot; mud;
A nation maddened with labour;
Interminable collision of energies --
Iron beating upon iron;
Smoke whirling upwards,
Speechless, impotent.

In vain the shrill, far cry
Of kittiwakes that fly
Where the sea waves leap green.
The meadows Apriline --

Noise, iron, smoke;
Iron, iron, iron.

闹;
铁的蹄,铁的轮,铁的喧嚣;

尖锐地遥远地叫;
碧绿而静悄悄;

煤炭;泥淖;
国民以劳动而癫狂了;
铁打上铁;

铁,煤烟,闹;

 HOKKU

By Amy Lowell

I
Night lies beside me
Chaste and cold as a sharp sword.
It and I alone.

II
Staying in my room,
I thought of the new spring leaves.
That day was happy.

III
When the flower falls
The leaf is no more cherished.
Every day I fear.

IV
Laugh—it is nothing.
To others you may seem gay,
I watch with grieved eyes.

 LIKE BARLEY BENDING

Sara Teasdale

Like barley bending
In low fields by the sea,
Singing in hard wind
Ceaselessly.

Like barley bending,
And rising again,
So would I, unbroken,
Rise from pain;

So would I softly,
Day long, night long,
Change my sorrow
Into song.
