NASALIZATION,DENTALIZATION,AND VELARIZATION are all
instances of ASSIMILATION,a process by which one sound takes on
some or all the characteristics of a neighbouring
sound.Assimilation is often used synonymously with
coarticulation.Similarly,there are two possibilites of
assimilation:if a following sound is influencing a preceding
sound,we call it REGRESSIVE ASSIMILATION;the converse process,in
which a preceding sound is influencing a following sound,is know as
PROGRESSIVE ASSIMILATION.Studies of English fricatives and
affricates have shown that their voicing is severely influenced by
the voicing of the following sound.
鼻化，齿化和腭化都是同化的例子，同化就是指一个音具有了临近的一部分或者全部特征这一过程。同化经常被当作协同发音的同义词来使用，同样，同化有两种可能：如果后面的音影响前面的音，我们成为“逆同化”；相反的过程，我们称为“顺同化”。对英语擦音和赛擦音的研究表明它们的浊音音质其实深受其后辅音清浊的影响。
