到1914年12月底，第一次世界大战仅用了5个月的时间就在全欧洲夺去了近百万人的生命。但在圣诞节前夕，战场上出现了一个真正的奇迹，尽管命令继续攻击，大炮却沉默了下来。听到的不是枪击声，而是听到德国和英国士兵的颂歌，很快西部阵线上的战争变成了欢快的歌声。休战已蔓延到前线的其他地区，并有很多关于对方足球比赛的故事。在许多部门，停火在12月25日继续，有些地区则持续到新年。
