Unnecessary Sophistry
( 23. Medical Science & Lifespan )

Nowdays, some guy is still making videos
specifically to defame TCM ( Traditional
Chinese Medicine).

For example, he shouted in the video:

"I never believe in TCM !

Without western medicine, the average
lifespan of people was only around 30
years, and even the average lifespan
of emperors was only 35 years ."

Actually, such kind of words is indeed very
marketable, but in reality, we should think
more rationally about such issues, because
analyzing such issues must be carried out
in the historical context, otherwise it will
be blind and the conclusions drawn will
inevitably be some nonsenses which sound
reasonable, but in reality are meaningless.

1. In the past, underdeveloped medical science
was indeed a significant reason for people's
short lifespans

But at least, we can easily identify the
following obvious serious factors:

1.1 Extremely poor standard of living

In the past, due to insufficient agricultural
production levels, there was a shortage of
food, which led to long-term malnutrition
for many people, especially during a certain
period of time every year when the old grain
had been eaten up but the new grain had
not yet been harvested.

At this time, hunger often became the norm.

If there was a disaster year, it would be even
worse.

1.2. The living environment is extremely
harsh

For example, due to the lack of air conditioning
in the past, both harsh winters and hot summers
severely tested people's physical endurance.

At that time, most of the work was done outdoors,
which forced workers to endure the harsh cold and
heat from nature.

In addition, even in the harsh winter, many
people were still unable to eat and wear
enough.

1.3. Long term physical exhaustion

Due to the lack of mechanization and
transportation, such as cars, many jobs
in the past relied solely on physical
exertion.

So physical exhaustion was the norm
at that time.

Nowadays, people can almost show off
everywhere by walking 10 kilometers,
which was insignificant in the past.

In fact, they often had to carry burdens
and travel long distances in the past.

1.4. Getting married too early

In the past, girls often got married at
the age of 14 or 15.

Getting married so early reduced not only
their own lifespans, but also the lifespans
of their offspring.

1.5. Polygamy

In ancient times, many people had the idea
of having more children in order to get a
better life for their own elderly life.

So, once their lives improved a bit, they
would find ways to marry a concubine,
preferably one man got several concubines,
which also reduced their lifespans.

1.6. Excessive corporal punishment

In ancient times, people were often subjected
to corporal punishment, especially in childhood
when they were subjected to excessive physical
punishment by their elders.

1.7. Due to the war, many people died
tragically.

2. There were also several unfavorable factors
regarding the lifespans of emperors,
including:

2.1. Over-nutrition and insufficient physical
expenditure.

2.2. holding too many harems but sperms
exhausted.

2.3. Abnormal death.

2.4. Imperial physician self-protection.

In the past, when an emperor fell ill, perhaps
his imperial physician dared not prescribe the
right medicine and even did not publicly
report certain illnesses.

Therefore, they only used some traditional
Chinese medicine supplements, and handled
the illness casually, which was forced by
external forces rather than the fault of TCM.

Our ancient imperial physicians were not like
the western medicine of 1799, who were some
arrogant so that they even dared to use
bloodletting therapy on Mr. George Washington.

Of course, they did achieve an astonishing
result in the end !

3. Western medicine has indeed greatly
increased lifespans, but there are also
many factors that are beneficial for
increasing lifespans, but these factors
are basically unrelated to western medicine.

For example:

3.1. Improvement in living standards.

3.2. Improvement of living environment.

3.3. Significant reduction in physical exhaustion

3.4. More rational and healthy in marriage

3.5. Due to the progress of civilization, there is
almost no corporal punishment now

3.6.  The number of wars or disasters has decreased

Now then, what role does medical science
have on our average  lifespan?  We should
have the following understanding:

Firstly, despite the harsh conditions in the
past, TCM had already tried its best to
increase the average lifespan of people.

Perhaps some guys refuse to acknowledge
this conclusion, then, let's take a look at
the current situation:

On television, we often see the following
types of cases:

Many patients who cannot be effectively
treated by western medicine have to try
TCM in the end, and as a result, they
receive effective treatment, which ensures
that the patient's lifespan is extended.

This actually serves as a safety for the
patient's lifespans.

Of course, it is really unfair to seek TCM
only when patients are almost in a state
of death.

Such unfairness often limits the role of
TCM in prolonging patients' lives.

But in reality, like western medicine, TCM
can achieve great success in prolonging
patients' lives.

Secondly. Western medicine has made
outstanding contributions to extending
lifespan, but we should not deny the
contribution of many modern technologies,
systems and concepts to extending lifespan.

At the same time, we should respect the
role of TCM in providing safety for
patients' lives and improving their quality
of life.

In fact, we can understand this issue easily
as long as we look at the global population
statistics earlier .
