Sophistry
( 14. The Authority
Of
Now, we can
talk about the authority of personal
knowledge:
FIRSTLY, a principle should be
established:
Professional knowledge can only have
a
certain level of authority
when applied
correctly, rationally
and in good faith.
Otherwise,
professional knowledge will lack
any authority and may even be
destructive.
SECONDLY, we should recognize that
different
types of
talents have different levels of
authority.
Based
on he
Professional Level Characteristic
Curve, there are three types:
expert
talents,
versatile talents and
ordinary
professionals.
So, we
can easily draw the following conclusions:
1. Expert
talents only possess authority
within
their own field
of expertise.
2. Versatile
talents possess authority in
multiple
professional
fields, but it is best to limit it
to
the professional fields
covered by the high
platform trapezoid
in its professional level
characteristic curve
3. Ordinary
professionals generally lack
authority,
but they have a
certain degree of authority on
specific issues
within their own professional scope
or technical
level, which should be respected as
much as
possible.
Now, we can
answer what "To take
ignorance
as
authority" means.
The taking of
ignorance as authority usually
occurs in the
following situations:
1.
Ordinary professionals
impersonating
Expert or Versatile talents
For example,
many western medicine practitioners
are at most
just ordinary professionals, they
are
only expert in
the field of medical technology
and basically
ignorant of true medical science,
such as TCM
(Traditional Chinese Medicine).
However, they
always like to gossip about
TCM,
though they
hardly understand TCM.
So, in
the end, they have to deny many
facts
and try
to cover up their
professional
shortcomings in this way, which is
actually
awkward,
but they even believe that
they
have
participated in academic discussions !
2.
Expert talents impersonating
versatile
talents, Or
acting recklessly towards
other professions
For example,
some person, once he had
obtained a
professional title, such as a professor, immediately assumed
authority and pretended
to understand
everything and enjoyed pointing
fingers and
gossiping with others.
Whenever he
discovers something difficult to
understand, he
always says "no" to it.
e.g. TCM often encounters such
guys.
But if someone
disagrees or refutes what he
said, this guy
would show off his diploma
and
professional title.
Actually, it's just
pitiful !
All of these
are typical manifestations of
taking
ignorance as authority.
To better
understand such issues, let's give
an
analogy.
A chess master
saw a pair of Go masters playing
together.
As a result, he
discovered that Go masters never
referred to the
rules of chess when arranging
their
formations.
So, the chess
master explained the rules of
chess to the
two go masters, but these two go
masters only
smiled and did not listen to his
advice.
This
immediately made the chess master
furious, so, he
said:
"Playing chess like you is
not standardized
or
reasonable.
And both of you should
know:
I am a chess master
!
So, I have enough knowledge to
prove
that your chess is
irregular and
unreasonable ! "
Finally, in a
fit of anger, he simply flipped
over the Go
board !
This is
precisely the current situation of TCM !
A group
of persons who only understand the
theory
of western medicine but not care
about
the
effectiveness of treating diseases
pretend
to
understand TCM and criticize TCM, by
disregarding both a lot
of facts that TCM can
effectively treat many
diseases and pains or
helplessness of similar
patients.
So, such guys
are just seeking the highs from
professional
paranoia and they
disregard
integrity or
shame .
They often
shout that they are professional
authorities,
and even say that TCM is not
knowledge.
But in fact,
their understanding of knowledge
is very poor,
far from reaching the professional
level, let
alone authority !
