Medical Science Is Not A Sophistry
( 12.
The Growth Of Disciplines )
Some
philosophical person, as philosophy
professor for
just more than six years, took
it for granted
that he was qualified to ruin
TCM
(Traditional Chinese Medicine) by
himself
.
And it seems
that there was quite a stir at
that
time.
If we take a
serious look at the relevant
information, we
will find that he acted
absurdly to
TCM.
That's
ridiculous !
For example, he
often talked about the book,
"
Practice of Medicine and Materia
Medica",
which was
published in Shanghai in 1858 and
co-authored by
Mr. Benjamin Hobson and
Guan Maocai.
This guy also
said:
"150 years ago, medical
predecessors
called for the abolition of TCM ."
He just redid
this homework
How ignorant he was !
This guy cited
two viewpoints from the works of
Mr. Benjamin
Hobson :
1.
Should consume cow milk, not human milk.
2. It is
too difficult to master TCM
for
Prescriptions in TCM often involve
multiple
treatments for one disease.
Of cause, it
should be acknowledged that
Mr. Hobson's
viewpoint is somewhat reasonable,
but it doesn't
mean that there are enough
reasons to
completely reject TCM, especially
since Mr.
Hobson himself didn't intende to
abolish TCM
.
To better
understand this issue, let's take a
closer look at
Mr. Benjamin Hobson and his
"Practice of Medicine
and Materia Medica".
1.
Mr. Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873)
was
the
first person in the London
Missionary
Society
to practice medicine and
preach in
Guangzhou.
And Mr. Hobson
wrote five types of medical
books, namely:
1.“Treatise on physiology”
2.“Natura1 Philosophy”
3.“First
Lines of the Practice of
Surgery
in the
West”
4.“Practice of Medicine and
Materia Medica”
5.“Treatise on Midwifery and
Diseases
of
Children”
Objectively
speaking, Mr. Hobson made
significant
contributions to the popularization
of
western medicine in China.
2. Mr. Hobson's
attitude towards TCM is inclusive,
not
exclusive.
For
example:
2.1 As early as
150 years ago, in the era of
Mr. Hobson,
western medical theory was not yet
mature, so that
Mr. Hobson had to apply the
theory of TCM
to explain the diagnostic methods
and treatment
principles of western medicine.
Anyway, it is
enough to prove Mr. Hobson's
tolerance and
admiration for TCM .
2.2 Mr. Hobson
himself also used some traditional
Chinese
herbs in clinical practice, although it
is
very limited,
it reflects his understanding and
adoption of
TCM, he didn't want to completely
abandon
TCM.
Now, we can
severely question this philosophy
professor:
1. Mr. Hobson
did not have any intention to
completely
negate TCM, but you used his words
to completely
negate TCM, and even to make
others
mistakenly believe that Mr. Hobson
also
dislikes TCM or
even want to completely abolish
TCM
!
Is this fair to
a medical predecessor ?
As we know, it
is an extremely common occurrence
that Mr.
Hobson, as a foreign western
medicine
practitioner
150 years ago, had various
misunderstandings about TCM .
But how could
his works become the tools for you
guys to destroy
TCM ?
2. Mr. Hobson
criticized the unreasonable
practices of
TCM and questioned or criticized
some priciples
of TCM he could not understand,
which
ultimately belongs to the scholarly style.
But, facing
that TCM can effectively treat many
diseases, and
as a contemporary philosophy
professor,
you pretend to understand
everything,
and even more serious, you
found the words of a
foreign
western doctor 150 years ago, only
because
he
didn't understand TCM very much, and used
his
words as
an academic standard, and then
attempt
to
completely negate and reject TCM in this way .
Is
this ignorant
or shameless ?
As a philosophy
professor, wouldn't you
not
understand it
?
Actually,
almost all of the growth of many
disciplines
have been accompanied by debates .
As a primitive
medical science, TCM inevitably
carries some
unreasonable or even ridiculous
things.
But it is not
difficult to improve the theory of
TCM, so that
TCM gets the chance to develop
rapidly as long
as we adhere to rational analysis
and we adhere
to the first law of medical scince,
namely, we
should discuss science according to
facts, and
while we should discuss medical
science
according to therapeutic effects.
Simply
speaking, the development of a
discipline
is something
like the growth of a big tree:
We can not cut
a tree down just because we find
some dead
branches or fallen leaves in this tree.
Otherwise, no
sapling can grow into a towering
tree.
In the same
way, the developments of philosophy
or medical
science, including both TCM and
western
medicine, go through a process of
eliminating
falsehood and preserving truth.
As a philosophy
professor, wouldn't you not even
know all about
these ?
