Although Gmail users can communicate with one another in a variety of languages, messages sent to or from other email providers may be encoded in a format that causes the text of a message to be unreadable. Gmail uses UTF-8 encoding for all messages. If you are unable to send or receive messages in languages other than English, we suggest adjusting your browser's encoding settings (which it appears you may have already done.)

To adjust encoding settings in Internet Explorer, please follow these
steps:

1. Click the 'View' menu at the top of your browser, and select 'Encoding.'
2. Select 'Unicode (UTF-8)' from the list of options.

If you continue to experience difficulty reading messages in languages other than English, this may be due to possible conversion in the encoding when communicating between mail clients. We are aware of some of these issues and our engineers are working diligently to find a solution.

In the meantime, as you have already discovered, try opening the original message using the UTF-8 setting in your browser to see if this helps.

To view original message:
1) Open the message.
2) Select 'More Options.'
3) Select 'Show Original.'
