鼓岭古道位于福州东郊鳝溪景区西侧，全长3公里。始建于清咸丰十一年（1861），历史上人们称这条古道为“官道”，曾经是南来北往、热闹繁华的交通要道。牛头寨位于鼓岭之北区，过仑大坪顶东侧，海拔600多米，乃明朝名将戚继光于嘉靖四十二年（1563）在此设立的军寨，是福州府十大旱寨之一，是保卫福州府的一大重要关口，今石砌的寨墙基石仍在，使人能领略当年戚家军保家卫国的风采。牛头寨山顶悬崖绝壁处，有一块酷似牛头的“牛头石”，因而名为“牛头崖”，牛头寨也因此得名。牛头对望有一瀑布，水自山顶一泻而下，成一线瀑布，洁白如棉，瀑布下方有“小姐洞”（又称神女洞）。牛头寨寨墙外有一条石阶古道，已历千年，为古时福州与外交通的必由之路，其道东南经亭江镇的前洋到连江，西北经鼓山镇到福州。
