WHITE, E. B. (1899--     ), American writer, whose crisp, graceful, and highly individual style, as well as his independence of thought, made him one of America’s leading essayist.

   Elwyn Brooks White was born in Mount Vernon, N. Y., on July 11, 1899. After service as an Army private in 1918, he graduated from Cornell University in 1921. He worked as a reporter on the Seattle Times and as an advertising copywriter before joining the New Yorker magazine in 1926, a year after its founding. For 12 years he wrote the editorial essays in the magazine’s “notes and Comments” and contributed verse and other pieces. In 1937 he moved to a farm in North Brooklyn, Me., and from this retreat continued writing, including a column, “One Man’s Meat,” in Harper’s (1938—1943) and free-lance pieces for The New Yorker.

   White’s publications include two books of verse, The Lady Is Gold (1929) and The Fox of Peapack (1938); Is Sex Necessary? (1929), satirical essays with James Thurber; collected pieces, including Every Day Is Saturday (1934), Quo Vadimus (1929), One Man’s Meat (1942; enlarged ed. 1944), The Second Tree from the Corner(1953), and The Points of My Compass (1962); children books,Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970); Here Is New York (1949), a personal characterization; and The Wild Flag (1946), a plea for world law.

   With his wife, the former Katharine Sergeant Angell, a New Yorker editor, he edited A Sub-treasury of American Humor (1941). His revised edition of William Strunk, Jr.’s The Elements of Style was issued in 1959.

   In 1960, White was awarded the gold medal for essays and criticism of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.
