Boulton and Lucas (2011, p2509)
pointed out that ‘The universities must have a clear sense of their
own about what they stand for and what their purpose is. They
should not be rushed by a combination of inducements, urgency and
regulation into accepting an identity proffered them from their
ambient world, but they must engage with it to define a commonly
accepted purpose’. It is true that universities need to provide
their own answers to the questions: What education really is? What
are universities for?
