Live on the land and you will know its beauty. Work on the land and you will respect all forms of life. Think deeply on the land you shall become closer to the truth. On the farmland, we feel the four seasons of nature rotating and the cycle of all living things reincarnating. We know the beauty of living things using and producing together. On the farmland, there are birds, vegetables, fruit trees, insects and microorganisms, all of which we harmoniously interact with. When we take care of nature, we as humans also take care of ourselves. On the farmland, by cleverly taking advantage of the material and energy in nature, the earth can endow us with rich and nutritious food. Knowing where the real problem is can help us to think of innovative solutions.
Agriculture is closely interrelated to everyone’s diet. Agriculture is also the portal through which we can change the world through changing ourselves. Agriculture is not only a means to produce farm products, but is also an important part of our food culture education. More importantly, agriculture is a way to interact with nature. In order for “Eat in season, eat locally” to become a diet ideology, there must be a localized movement. This movement was established on a globalized scale. When dealing with food surplus and food shortages, the influence of our diet on agricultural production structure, and the relationship between agriculture, finance and politics, only through facing these problems with a globalized thought process can we see that “Change starts with us” is not just a meaningless slogan.
We hope that through raising these types of questions, we can attract children to come see the farm and experience the natural world. The earth is our mother and everyone is her child. Through engaging in farm activities in the school garden, children can understand natural agriculture and agricultural production methods. They also have the opportunity to establish a healthier relationship with food. Agriculture originally should not be separated from the city; rather, it should be apart of the city development. Letting children know where their food comes from will be an important part of food education in the future.

“Shared Harvest” has two locations. The first location is in Tongzhou District, Xiji Town, Mafang Village and has 60 acres of organically produced crops as well as 110 acres of forestland for breeding. The second location is in Shunyi District, Long Wan Tun Town, Liu Zhuang Hu Village. The Shunyi Farm has 50 acres of farmland and includes the Hei Long Jiang Wuchang Rice Farmer Cooperation, the Shanxi Apple Grains Farmer Coorperation and about ten other ecological farmer mutual networks. Shared Harvest farm has already become Beijing’s most popular local CSA farm and a city-based ecological agriculture farm. Hundreds of domestic and foreign media such as China Daily and BBC have carried out news reports at Shared Harvest. Our Shared Harvest slogan “Eat in season, Eat locally” has already influenced consumers around the country!
Starting in 2014, Shared Harvest will place food education
as an important part of our work. The most important education
projects include our Children of the Earth School, school garden
