Things are not always what they seem.
So, last week, returning from the southern hemisphere after
participating in the Air ??Wine Awards, I saw a Buddhist monk in
bright saffron robes seating in Business
Class.
MONK IN
BUSINESS
It was as incongruous a
thought as much as a surreal sight because, as far as I remember,
Prince Siddharta had forsaken a life of luxury and privilege and
wandered off in search of enlightenment, essentially as a
beggar.
I am not, of course, suggesting the monk go round the plane begging
for food (which wasn’t that good in the first
place), but it had seemed to me the monk wasn’t
much for being with the masses back in economy, whose interest and
well-being, I assume, should have been one of his priorities and
pieties. Then, of course, he may be a new breed of celebrity
Buddhist monks like some of those American evangelists who live in
huge mansions complete with swimming pool and jacuzzis, get
chauffeured around in stretch limousines, and wear Brioni
suits.
Truth be known, Prince Siddharta had even forsook his loyal horse,
so determined was he to just walk, rather than be comfortable (and
looking down at people from the saddle).
We have, of course, to be realistic and not insist the monk swim or
levitate all the way from ??to ??. Air-travel is really the way
forward and I was disappointed for the holy chap that the flight
had only Economy and Business but no First Class.
