粟特人，中国史籍中称他们为“昭武九姓”等，是生活在中亚的阿姆河和锡尔河之间粟特地区（Sogdiana）的，使用东部伊朗方言的中亚古代民族，属于伊朗人种。粟特人建立过许多绿洲城邦，但从没有建立过统一的国家，因此长期受周边的强大外族势力的控制。由于粟特地区处于中亚西部丝绸之路的干线上，粟特人成为了一个独具特色的商业民族，他们通过漫长的丝绸之路频繁往来于中亚与中国之间，成为中世纪东西方贸易的承担者。
粟特人组成商团，成群结队地东来中国贩易，有许多人就逐渐在经商之地留居下来。在南北朝到唐朝时期，沿丝绸之路及周边的于阗、楼兰、高昌、敦煌、武威、长安、洛阳等大小城市形成一个个移民聚落。
粟特人主要信仰袄教。在敦煌长城烽燧下发现的粟特文古信札里，可以确证祆教早在公元4世纪初就由粟特人带到了中国。他们在从事丝绸的中转贸易的同时，还在欧亚内陆扮演着传播多元文化和多种宗教的角色，对中西文化的沟通、交流起过至关重要的作用。
近年来，有关粟特人进入中国的出土文献资料和考古文物实证不断被发现，特别是虞弘、安伽墓的发现，进一步推动了国际学术界研究的热潮，成为当前最受关注的前沿领域之一。2003年6月发掘的北周史君墓，墓中出土石刻图像内容涉及汉文化、袄教和佛教等，内容丰富，内涵深刻，对深入研究粟特人的文字及文化提供了珍贵的实物资料。
