这曲子可能与18世纪某些苏格兰的非宗教歌曲有关，作曲者已不可考，据研究应早期它在美国黑人教会很流行。

这首乐曲听起来悠长、空灵、圣洁，常被用作纪念或祈祷的场面，尤其适合用风笛悲凉的声音来表现。我曾经看过一个录像，是Andre Rieu的一次音乐会，他请来300名风笛手一起演奏这一乐曲，风笛声一响起，我就觉得一激灵，从心底里被震撼，尤其是从独奏到齐奏的对比。现场的观众同样如此，他们似乎也呆住了，不少情侣夫妇拥抱在一起，眼光泛起泪花。听了多少次，我还是同样的感觉。
