If I Were a Fish
by Marie Louise Allen
I like to play in water;
And if I were a fish,
I'd have water all around me
In a big glass dish.
And my tail would make it splatter
Till it splashed the sky -
And the Mother Fish would only say,
"Now, don't - get - dry!"

Has anybody seen my mouse?
by A. A. Milne
I opened his box for half a minute,
Just to make sure he was really in it,
And while I was looking, he jumped outside!
I tried to catch him, I tried, I tried...
I think he's somewhere about the house.
Has anyone seen my mouse?
Uncle John, have you seen my mouse?
Just a small sort of mouse, a dear little brown one.
He came from the country, he wasn't a town one,
So he'll feel all lonely in a London street;
Why, what could he possibly find to eat?
He must be somewhere. I'll ask Aunt Rose:
Have you
Oh, somewhere about -
He's just got out...
Hasn't anybody seen my mouse?

Kitten
小猫
by Valerie Worth
The black kitten,
Arched stiff,
Dances sidewise
From behind
The chair, leaps,
Tears away with
Fars back, spins,
Lands crouched
Flat on the floor,
Sighting something
At nose level,
Her eyes round
As oranges, her
Hind legs marking
Time: then she
Pounces, cactus -
Clawed, upon
A strayed
Strand of fluff:
Can anyone
Believe that she
Doesn't ask us
To laugh?

Grass
野草
by Valerie Worth
Grass on the lawn
Says nothing:
Clipped, empty,
Quiet.
Grass in the fields
Whistles, slides,
Casts up a foam
Of seeds,
Tangles itself
with leaves: hides
Whole rustling schools
Of mice.

How Many?
多少?
by Mary Ann Hoberman
A mother skunk all black and white
Leads her babies down the street
Pitter patter
Pitter patter
Pitter patter
TWENTY feet.
Off the toddle slow and steady
Making tiny twitter cries
Flitter flutter
Flitter flutter
Flitter flutter
TEN small eyes.
Nose to tail-tip in procession
Single-file the family trails
Flippy floppy
Flippy floppy
Flippy floppy
FIVE long tails.
Up the street a dag comes barking,
Sees the strangers, leaps pell-mell...
Ickle pickle
Ickle pickle
Ickle pickle
ONE BIG SMELL!

Almost
by Harry Behn
Peterboo and Prescott
And pretty Pam, too,
Are very many children
But they know what to do,
They eat all their cereal
And crusts of their bread,
They never need spankings,
They go quietly to bed,
They hang up their clothes,
They practice when they should,
And their manners are always
Exceptionally good.
This little poem
Is about Peterboo
And Pamela and Prescott -
And it's almost true.

Dinosaurs
by Valerie Worth
Dinosaurs
Do not count,
Because
They are all
Dead:
None of us
Saw them, dogs
Do not even
Know that
They were there -
But they
Still walk
About heavily
In everybody's
Head.

A Swing Song
by William Allingham
Swing, swing,
Sing, sing
Here's my throne, and I am a king!
Swing, sing,
Swing, sing,
Farewell earth, for I'm on the wing!
Low, high,
Here I fly,
Like a bird through sunny sky;
Free, free
Over the mountain, over the sea!
Up, down,
Up and down,
Which is the way to London Town?
Where, where?
Up in the air,
Close your eyes, and now you are there!
Soon, soon
Afternoon,
Over the sunset, over the moon;
Far, far
Over all bar,
Sweeping on fom star to star!
No, no
Low, low,
Sweeping daisies with my toe.
Slow, slow,
To and fro,
Slow -
Slow -
Slow -
Slow .
