A Brief Description of the Dance-Theater Talk and Workshop

Chinese dance theater artist Jingxin Shi, a visiting scholar in Performance Studies at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, will give two talks on Contemporary Chinese Dance Theater and a workshop on Body and Narrative.  All events are free and open to the public.

On March 17, Shi will discuss “Body and Narrative,” introducing the movement techniques and storytelling devices of her work.  The talk will be at 11 a.m. in Room 213 of the Graham Memorial Building.

 Later that same day, Shi will discuss “From the Olympics to XIN-ACT-LAB,” focusing on the development of contemporary Chinese dance theater in Post-Mao urban China.  The 2 p.m. lecture will be in Room 215 of the Hanes Art Center.

On March 18, Shi will conduct a dance-theater workshop on “Body-Narrative,” at 1 p.m. in Room 104 of the Center for Dramatic Art.  Attendees will learn to develop the storytelling/movement techniques and the ensemble compositional techniques of dance theater.   

 Ms. Shi is a choreographer and lecturer on dance at the Beijing Dance Academy (China).  She is the artistic director of XIN-ACT-LAB, an independent dance-theater company founded in early 2009. Since 2007, Shi has participated in a series of dance projects and festivals across Asia and Europe.  Her most recent works include a performance/research project on contemporary dance and ritual presented at the Japan Dance Research Center (PLATFORM) in 2009, and “the Bow project”—a cross-cultural dance-film project performed at the Pointe to Point, the 5th Asia-Europe Dance Forum in 2010.

The events are part of the series, “The Aural and Performative Asia,” sponsored by the Performing Arts and Special Activities Fund, the Carolina Asia Center, and the Department of Dramatic Art .
