http://oldwebsite.laurentian.ca/biology/english/images/chipmunk2.jpgThe education needed to be a vet is first you have to graduate from high school and also a bachelor's degree will help you tremendously for the next step but if you don't, then you will have an extremely hard time finding a medical college that will accept you even though most medical colleges don't require you to have a bachelor's degree. You should have very high grades from high school since spots are limited in medical colleges and you have to probably compete with a lot of other people to get a spot in a medical college since they mainly take only the people who have high grades since they want the smartest people. Then you have to be accepted to a veterinary medical college. It will probably take you roughly 4 entire years to get through college. The specific classes you need to take are organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, biochemistry, general biology, animal biology, animal nutrition, genetics, bertebrate embryology, cellular biology, microbiology, zoology, and systemic phsiology. The subjects to learn before taking those programs would be mainly math but you still need to know English or literaure, social science, and humanities. Experience with animals you already know will most likely help you get the education you need to become a vet.

http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/Zoology/graphics/ZoologyHome.jpgVets can specialize in any type of animal but they mostly specialize in animal health more than just 1 specific type of animal. They can also specialize in different animal body parts. Vets just specialize in anything that has to do with animals. They can also specialize in diseases pets might give or carry or they could spcialize in medicines needed to cure a pet or maybe surgery for a pet and then special treatment and items it will need afterwards.

Vets work in rooms similar to a doctor or dentist's room. They can work at home also but it depends on the size. They can even work in animal shelters or sometimes animal refugees. Other places that they work in are in aquariums or zoos. They mostly work in anywhere where there are animals. They also work near other vets too depending at where they are working at. A zoo or an aquarium must have a lot vets to take care of animals. If they work at their own house it would probably only have 1 vet or maybe even 2. They also can work in laboratories to research on they sumptoms a pet has to discover a cure or what treatment the pet should have. Not only doctors work in a hospital but some vets also can work in a hospital too. Sometimes they can work in large hospital so they can get much better, advanced, and new quipment or technology that they might need. They work mostly anyplace that might either have good and lots of equipment or where there are a lot of animals near for more jobs. They also can work outside by arriving after someone calls because there is a problem with 1 or even more animals although they still need to have a place to store supplies and they might have an office to receive calls.

http://www.visitwcvm.com/DONORS/CT_at_WCVM_files/radio0066_2.jpgThe tools that a veterinarian uses are stethoscopes, thermometers, bandages, syringes, intravenous tubes, otoscopes, sphygmomanometers, cotton, gauze, elizabethen collars, nail clippers, scissors, microscopes, and medicine. Veterinarians use pretty much the same items a doctor and a dentist have and use since the body parts might be different but they might have the same kinds of body parts a human has. Vets also use cones, which is one of the equipment that they use after surgery. They have lots of tools so they measure body temperature, fix up cuts, remove things that does not belong in there, and even take an animal's weight.

The things a veterinarian does is to wait for the next animal then depending on the symptoms that show they run tests to see what is the correct thing to do to make the animal better. It could be brushing the animal's teech or taking it's X-Ray and maybe they do surgery if they think there is a problem inside the animal's body if nothing else works when seeing the outside of the body and when they see something strange during an X-Ray or when using something to examine the body inside from the outside of the body. They also can try to fix a broken leg or maybe taking something out of the animal's body if it is not supposed to be in there or maybe even having to cut open a part of the body it they see something wrong then close the cut afterwards. They use all kinds of equipment just to find the correct cure for the animal or sometimes animals. Vets usually work long hours. They work about 10 hours or more on working days. Working hours might even range a lot higher on weekends.

http://www.naturewatch.org/foundation/lithuania/images/Vet1_small.jpgVets wear protective gloves and heavy coats so they can protect themselves from diseases that might be transmitted from the animal so he or she would not get sick while trying to find what is wrong with the animal. What they wear is very similar to a doctor's coat and gloves. They might wear masks too but that depends on what type of thing he or she will need to do like surgery for instance. The clothes they wear is mainly just to protect them from disease and saliva if they are brushing the animal's teeth or examining its mouth to see if the animal had a disease somewhere in its mouth.
