Wang Anshi(1021-1086)served as a prime minister of the Northern Song Dynasty and initiated with the blessing of the Emperor a reform movement later known historically as "Wang Anshi Reform".He was a famous writer of literary works and author of many exquisite verses and proses. He paid great attention to rhetorics and dictation.it is said that the verb"to green"in his well-known line"Wind of Spring has greened the South River Land again"was chosen by him only after dozens of laborious revisions. This story has been told by one generation to another for nearly a thousand years.
This poem was composed by Wang in his early years while serving as a local official in Zhejiang Province. In his verses,he described a magnificent mountain peak and a famous pagoda in the province, the exact locations of which are unknown.
In the first two lines,he gave readers a picture of the magnificent peak and the pagoda. The high peak thrusting to the sky,and the pagoda on top of it was even closer to it.How high would that be?The poet did not answer but just gave a poetic exaggeration that the pagoda itself was eight-thousand-feet high. Then he emphasized his view with a legend."It is said that from the very top you could see the sun rising from the sea when the first crow of a rooster is heard."In the last two lines,he said that you would never be afraid of floating clouds blocking your view because you were standing in the highest place in the world.
At the first glance, these lines are a simple admiration of the scenery. After close examination and consideration however, you might get a philosophical message that one can see farther only when he stands at a higher place.
