Li Bai(701-762)was a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. In his poems,he warmly eulogized progressive social ideas and strongly satirized the authority of the dark rule. As a master of describing the splendid scenery with his robustious verses,he wrote many excellent poems full of imagination and vigour. In the history of ancient Chinese poety,Li Bai reached the peak of romantic expressions of art ,thus widely praised as the"Immortal of Poems".
In his old age,Li was sent into exile by the imperial court. While traveling west to the place of exile,he found himself freed again during a mational amnesty at the City of White Emperor in Sichuan Province. Li wrote this poem in a seven-syllabled quatrain form during a home-bound journey by boat down stream to Jiangling in Hubei Province.
In the first two lines,Li told us that he left the City of White Emperor towering and sailed fast downstream just in one day to reach Jiangliang which was one thousand li(five hundred kilometers)away. He showed in these lines the beauty of the City, attractiveness of the sunny morning, swiftness of river currents and fast speed of the boat journey, all of which above given a vivid expression of his joy and happiness.
In the last two lines,he led us to the river journey through the famous seven-hundred-li Three-Gorges,where one could see precipitous mountains covered with thick woods among changing clouds, experience strong currents and dangerous shoals and hear the screams of monkeys on the river banks.Anxious to return home, the poet ignored all these. As he expressed in the poem:"The screams of monkeys on either bank.Had scarcely ceased echoing in my ear. When my skiff had left behind it.Ten thousand ranges of hills."
These verses are truly an elegant and original description of a pleasant journey. This short poem has been widely recognized as the best of ancient landscape verses.
