Episode One
Qinling, the only mountain range extending eastward across China’s mainland,
is the natural geographical boundary by which China is divided into North China and South China. Being dubbed “the central mountain range”, Qinling is of great importance for all living creatures there.
Two thousand years ago, local residents had realized the importance of Qinling,
which is testified by one article entitled Yu Gong of the important historic record Shang Shu. According to it, Chinese mainland is crisscrossed by seven mountain ranges, of which Qinling extends eastward across the center of China and is thus the geographical divide of Chinese mainland.
In this article, the area north of Qinling is called yin and the area south of Qinling yang. They actually refer to the recent North China and South China.
Qinling spread widely with the largest north-south span reaching 200 km. Rising abruptly from beneath the earth, Qinling greatly shaped the course of rivers, land formation, climate and the living environment of plants and animals.
The No. 1 Peak of Qinling is called Mount Taibai. With an altitude of 3771.2 meters, Mt. Taibai is the major peak of Qinling. It boasts the highest altitude among all mountains east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and this altitude contributes to its snow-mountain views incomparable in eastern and central China.
Qinling provides an ideal refuge for living creatures on the verge of extinction.
Till recently, you can still find more than 470 species of animals and birds and more than 3,800 kinds of seed plants.
In the depth of the forest, there are more lives which have never been found elsewhere.
There you can gain a glimpse of the giant pandas which have been living in Qinling for more than eight million years, the snub-nosed golden monkeys which appeared on earth one million years ago and the unique species—Budorcas taxicolor of Qinling.
30 years ago, the last 7 Crested Ibis were found in Yangxian County by the Qinling Mountains. From then on, more than 1,600 offspring of the 7 rare birds have been brooded and raised in Qinling.
Myriads of plants and animals live in harmony in this central mountain range, which heralds a prosperous future for this paradise for wild life.
Qinling is also the mother of several rivers.
Numerous rivers and streams flow from the high mountains and through the deep ravines to join the Weihe River and the Hanjiang River. These streams originate from Qinling and snake their way through the rolling mountains. After bidding farewell to their beloved mother, they roll down the valleys and drain at last into the two longest rivers of China—the Yellow River in North China and the Yangtze River in South China.
Geology proved that Mt. Huashan, the greatest mountain of Western China, is made up of a gigantic piece of granite. Geological changes, however, have contributed to this natural wonder featuring weird rock formation which gained Mt. Huashan the accolade of the Number One Mountain in China for Its Perilousness.
Mt. Huashan is precipitous; Louguantai, however, is known for its serenity and cultural embodiment. These two wonders coexist to contribute to the prosperity of Taoism in Chinese history which proposes the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
The drifting white cloud cannot cover the crimson maple leaves,
neither can the Buddhist monks be covered by the great mountains.
The Buddhist temples and Taoist temples hidden in the depth of Qinling proved that the mountains have been the holy shrine of all the six schools of Chinese Buddhism and meanwhile the perfect abode for the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. All of them have been the backbone of the Chinese traditional culture which emphasizes the coexistence of Heaven, Earth and the human beings.
The rich Chinese culture burgeoned in Qinling, developed rapidly and eventually spread from this holy mountain range to every corner of the world.
Today, we owe great gratitude for Qinling—the great mountain range which has sheltered and nourished the Chinese people.
Qinling is therefore highly regarded as the artery of China and the Father Mountain of the Chinese people. These accolades reflect Chinese people’s affection for Qinling Mountains and their gratitude and respect for this natural wonder which showcases the national spirit of China.
